Best Beaches in Phuket: Local's Guide

Phuket's Beach Landscape

Phuket is Thailand's largest island, and its western coastline is lined with beaches stretching from the northern tip to the southern point. With over 30 named beaches, choosing where to go can be overwhelming. This guide covers the main beaches with honest assessments to help you find the right one for your preferences.

Popular Beaches

Patong Beach

Patong is Phuket's most famous and busiest beach. The 3.5 kilometer stretch of sand is backed by the vibrant (and sometimes chaotic) Patong area, home to Bangla Road, hundreds of restaurants, shopping malls, and nightlife. The beach itself is wide with decent sand and swimmable water.

Best for: First-time visitors who want everything within walking distance, nightlife seekers, shoppers.

Not ideal for: Anyone seeking peace and quiet, or a natural beach experience. Patong is heavily commercialized with beach vendors, jet skis, and constant activity.

Karon Beach

Just south of Patong, Karon is a 3 kilometer long beach that feels noticeably calmer than its neighbor. The sand is fine and squeaks underfoot (a characteristic of its composition). The area behind the beach has restaurants, shops, and hotels, but the atmosphere is more relaxed than Patong.

Best for: Families, couples, swimmers. Good balance of amenities and relative calm.

Note: The undertow at Karon can be strong during the monsoon season (May to October). Swim between the red and yellow flags if lifeguards are present.

Kata Beach

South of Karon, Kata Beach is divided into Kata and Kata Noi. The main Kata Beach is about 1.5 kilometers long with a good range of restaurants, bars, and accommodation nearby. The vibe is relaxed, popular with a mix of families, surfers (during monsoon season), and long-stay visitors.

Best for: Families, surfers (May to October waves), budget travelers. Good sunset views.

Kata Noi Beach

The smaller sibling of Kata, Kata Noi is a sheltered 700-meter bay that feels more exclusive thanks to less development. The Katathani Resort occupies much of the beachfront, but the beach is public and accessible. The snorkeling at the rocky southern end is surprisingly good.

Best for: Snorkelers, couples, anyone wanting a quieter version of Kata.

Northern Beaches

Bang Tao Beach

An 8 kilometer long beach on the west coast, Bang Tao is one of Phuket's longest beaches. The northern section is home to the Laguna Phuket resort complex (several high-end hotels sharing a landscaped area), while the southern end is more local and natural.

Best for: Resort guests, long walks on the beach, horseback riding (available at the northern end).

Surin Beach

A relatively short (about 800 meters) but very attractive beach between Bang Tao and Kamala. Surin has clear water, a steep sandy slope into the sea, and a more upscale feel. Beach clubs and fine dining restaurants are nearby.

Best for: Beach club culture, upscale dining, scenic beauty.

Caution: Strong waves and undertow during monsoon season make swimming dangerous from May to October.

Nai Thon Beach

A quiet 1 kilometer beach in northwestern Phuket, close to the airport but feeling worlds away from the tourist strip. Development is minimal, with a few local restaurants and small hotels. The beach is wide, the sand is golden, and the water is usually calm during high season.

Best for: Travelers seeking a quiet, local beach experience away from crowds.

Mai Khao Beach

Phuket's longest beach at about 11 kilometers, located at the very north of the island near the airport. The beach is part of Sirinath National Park and is mostly undeveloped. You can walk for ages without seeing another person. From November to February, sea turtles occasionally nest here.

Best for: Solitude seekers, nature lovers, long beach walks, plane spotters (the airport runway is nearby).

Southern Beaches

Nai Harn Beach

Tucked into the southern tip of Phuket, Nai Harn is a local favorite. The 1 kilometer beach sits in a sheltered bay with the Nai Harn lake and monastery behind it. The water is excellent for swimming during the dry season, and the sunset views are among the best in Phuket.

Best for: Locals and repeat visitors, sunset watching, swimming. Popular with expats.

Rawai Beach

Rawai is not really a swimming beach since the water is too shallow and full of longtail boats. However, it is an excellent spot for seafood. The Rawai seafood market along the beachfront lets you buy fresh catch and have it cooked at adjacent restaurants. This is also where you catch boats to Coral Island and the Racha Islands.

Best for: Seafood lovers, catching boats to nearby islands.

Ao Sane (Secret Beach)

A small, rocky cove accessible from the road between Nai Harn and the Windmill Viewpoint. The beach is just 200 meters long with rocky entry, but the snorkeling is excellent with reef fish, sea urchins, and good coral coverage. It is not well signposted and easy to miss.

Best for: Snorkelers, adventurous visitors seeking a hidden spot.

East Coast Beaches

Phuket's east coast is mostly mangrove and not suited for swimming, with one notable exception:

Ao Yon Beach

A small, protected bay near Cape Panwa on the southeast coast. It is very quiet, with a few local restaurants. The water is calm year round due to its sheltered position, making it good for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

Choosing Your Beach

Here is a quick reference:

  • For nightlife and convenience: Patong
  • For families: Karon, Kata, or Bang Tao
  • For couples: Kata Noi, Surin, or Nai Harn
  • For quiet and nature: Nai Thon, Mai Khao, or Ao Sane
  • For snorkeling on the beach: Kata Noi or Ao Sane
  • For seafood: Rawai

No matter which beach you choose, remember that the best snorkeling and swimming are found at the islands off Phuket's coast. A day at the beach combined with an island tour on another day gives you the best of both worlds.
