Similan vs Surin Islands: Which to Visit?

Thailand's Two Premier Snorkeling Destinations

The Similan and Surin Islands are both located in the Andaman Sea northwest of Phuket and are both national marine parks with exceptional snorkeling. They are open during the same season (approximately November to May) and both offer pristine reefs in protected waters. However, they differ in accessibility, character, and what they offer beyond snorkeling.

Quick Comparison

  • Distance from Phuket: Similan is closer (70 km); Surin is more remote (100 km)
  • Day trip duration: Similan 12 hours; Surin 14 to 15 hours
  • Road time to pier: Similan 1.5 hours; Surin 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Boat time: Both about 60 to 70 minutes from their respective piers
  • Park fee: Both 500 THB for foreign adults
  • Tour cost from Phuket: Similan 2,500 to 4,500 THB; Surin 3,500 to 5,500 THB

Snorkeling Quality

Similan Islands

The Similan Islands have a mix of hard and soft corals across diverse underwater landscapes. The signature features are massive granite boulders (some the size of houses) that create dramatic underwater swim-throughs and overhangs. The combination of granite and coral creates a unique underwater environment not found at the Surin Islands.

Visibility typically ranges from 15 to 30 meters. Marine life is abundant: sea turtles, reef sharks, clownfish, parrotfish, and schools of fusiliers are common sightings.

Surin Islands

The Surin Islands have some of the healthiest shallow reefs in Thailand, with over 200 species of hard coral. The reefs start right at the beach in 1 to 2 meters of water, making them extremely accessible. The coral coverage and diversity is arguably denser than the Similans, particularly for hard corals.

Visibility is generally 10 to 25 meters (slightly less than Similans due to the shallower reefs). Marine life is equally impressive, with the added possibility of manta ray sightings (February to April) at nearby Richelieu Rock.

Winner: Tie. Similan for dramatic underwater landscapes; Surin for reef density and accessibility.

Above Water

Similan Islands

Beautiful white sand beaches, particularly on Islands 4 and 8. The famous Sail Rock (Balance Rock) on Island 8 is an iconic photo opportunity. You can climb to a viewpoint on Island 8 for panoramic views. The islands have more beach area for relaxation between snorkeling sessions.

Surin Islands

Beaches are nice but less dramatic than the Similans. The main above-water attraction is the Moken sea gypsy village on South Surin Island, a unique cultural experience where you can learn about this indigenous seafaring community. There is nothing comparable at the Similans.

Winner: Similan for beaches and scenery; Surin for the cultural experience.

Practical Considerations

Travel Time

A Similan day trip from Phuket is already a long day (12 hours door to door). A Surin day trip adds another 2+ hours of road time, making it a 14 to 15 hour day. If you are based in Khao Lak instead of Phuket, the difference is smaller.

Crowds

The Similans receive significantly more visitors than the Surins due to easier access. If avoiding crowds is a priority, the Surins offer a more remote, less touristed experience.

Availability

Both are available only November to May. Both are accessible as day trips from Phuket, though the Surins are also well-served from Khao Lak and Kuraburi.

Who Should Choose the Similan Islands?

  • First-time visitors to the region (the easier, shorter day trip)
  • Photographers (dramatic underwater and above-water scenery)
  • Families (shorter travel day, more beach time)
  • Anyone who values beautiful beaches alongside snorkeling

Who Should Choose the Surin Islands?

  • Dedicated snorkelers who want the healthiest reefs possible
  • Travelers interested in indigenous culture (Moken village)
  • Those who have already visited the Similans
  • Visitors who prefer fewer crowds and a more remote feeling

Can You Do Both?

If you have a week or more and are visiting during the open season, doing both is absolutely worthwhile. They offer different enough experiences that one does not replace the other. Space them at least a day apart to avoid exhaustion from back-to-back long days.

Both the Similan and Surin Islands represent the best that Thai snorkeling has to offer. You really cannot go wrong with either choice. Browse our available tours for current availability and pricing.

Liveaboard Option

For the ultimate experience, consider a liveaboard diving trip that visits both the Similan and Surin Islands plus the famous Richelieu Rock over 3 to 5 days. These trips depart from Tap Lamu Pier and cost 15,000 to 35,000 THB depending on duration and vessel quality. Liveaboards give you early morning and late afternoon dives when conditions are best and day-trip boats have not yet arrived or have already departed for the day. For dedicated divers and snorkelers with the budget and time, this is the definitive Andaman Sea experience that covers both island groups comprehensively.

Environmental Considerations

Both parks face ongoing conservation challenges from climate change and tourism pressure. As a visitor, you can help by using only reef-safe sunscreen without oxybenzone or octinoxate, not touching or standing on any coral formations, not feeding fish or other marine life, taking all rubbish back with you to the mainland, following park ranger instructions at all times, and reporting any environmental damage you witness to park staff. The entrance fees you pay directly fund conservation efforts at both parks. Your visit, done responsibly and with awareness, actively supports the ongoing protection of these remarkable marine environments for future generations.
