Stand Up Paddleboarding in Phuket

SUP in Phuket

Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) has become increasingly popular in Phuket over the past few years. The combination of warm water, scenic coastline, and sheltered bays makes Phuket a great destination for this accessible water sport. Unlike surfing or kiteboarding, SUP requires no waves and can be learned in minutes, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Best SUP Spots in Phuket

Ao Yon Beach (Cape Panwa)

The best SUP location on Phuket island. This small, sheltered bay on the southeast coast is protected from the open ocean, resulting in consistently calm, flat water. There is a SUP rental station right on the beach, and the scenery along the coastline is beautiful. You can paddle along the shoreline, explore nearby rocky outcrops, and enjoy a peaceful session with minimal boat traffic.

Conditions: Calm year round. Best in the morning before wind picks up.

Rental: 300 to 500 THB per hour.

Nai Harn Beach

During the dry season (November to April), Nai Harn Lake (the freshwater lagoon behind the beach) and the sheltered bay offer good SUP conditions. The beach itself is beautiful, and paddling out toward the headlands provides excellent views.

Conditions: Dry season only. Can be wavy and dangerous during monsoon.

Rental: 300 to 500 THB per hour from beach vendors.

Bang Tao Beach

The northern section of this long beach has calm conditions in the dry season. Some of the resorts in the Laguna complex offer SUP boards for guests, and there are rental options for non-guests as well.

Conditions: Dry season best. Some rental options year round in the lagoon area.

Rawai Beach

While not a swimming beach, the shallow, calm water at Rawai is suitable for SUP. You can paddle along the coast toward Promthep Cape or out toward the small islands offshore.

Koh Racha and Island SUP

For a premium SUP experience, some private boat charters bring paddleboards to the islands. Paddleboarding in the crystal clear water at Koh Racha Yai or around Coral Island is spectacular, as you can see the sea floor clearly beneath your board.

Getting Started

If you have never tried SUP before, here are the basics:

  1. Start on your knees. Get comfortable balancing on the board before standing up.
  2. Stand up slowly. Place your feet where your knees were, shoulder-width apart, in the center of the board.
  3. Look at the horizon. Looking down at your feet makes you less stable. Keep your gaze forward.
  4. Use your core. Paddle with your core muscles, not just your arms. This prevents fatigue and improves stability.
  5. Fall safely. If you lose balance, fall to the side into the water, not onto the board.

Most people can stand and paddle within 10 to 15 minutes. After 30 minutes, you will feel comfortable. It is one of the easiest water sports to learn.

SUP Lessons

Several operators in Phuket offer SUP lessons for beginners:

  • Group lesson (2 to 4 people): 800 to 1,500 THB per person for 1 to 2 hours
  • Private lesson: 1,500 to 2,500 THB for 1 to 2 hours
  • SUP yoga class: 1,000 to 2,000 THB per person (yes, yoga on a paddleboard, it is harder than it looks)

SUP Tours

Guided SUP tours are available, typically paddling along a scenic section of coastline with stops for snorkeling or beach visits. These are a great way to explore areas you would not see from the beach.

Duration: 2 to 3 hours

Cost: 1,500 to 3,000 THB per person including board and guide

When to SUP

  • Best time of day: Early morning (7:00 to 9:00 AM) when the water is glassiest and the air is cooler.
  • Best season: November to April for open coast locations. Sheltered spots like Ao Yon work year round.
  • Avoid: Windy afternoons and red-flagged beaches during monsoon season.

Tips

  • Wear sunscreen and a hat. You are fully exposed on a paddleboard.
  • Use a leash. Attach the board's leash to your ankle so it does not float away if you fall.
  • Bring water. SUP is more physically demanding than it looks. Stay hydrated.
  • Wear a rash guard. Sun protection and light wind protection.
  • Start in calm water. Build your confidence before heading to more exposed areas.

SUP is a wonderful way to experience Phuket's coastline from a different perspective. It combines exercise, relaxation, and scenery in a uniquely enjoyable way. For more water-based activities, see our guides to snorkeling and kayaking, or browse all available tours.

SUP Fitness and Health Benefits

Beyond the fun factor, stand up paddleboarding is an excellent full-body workout. It engages your core muscles continuously for balance, works your arms and shoulders during paddling, and improves your overall coordination and posture. A one-hour session burns 300 to 500 calories depending on intensity, making it one of the more physically rewarding beach activities available in Phuket.

The low-impact nature of SUP makes it suitable for people recovering from injuries or those who find running or gym workouts hard on their joints. The warm water and beautiful scenery also make the exercise feel more like play than a workout, which keeps you paddling longer than you might exercise in a gym.

Renting vs Buying for Long Stays

If you are staying in Phuket for an extended period, buying an inflatable SUP board can be more economical than daily rentals. Inflatable boards are available at sports shops in Phuket for 8,000 to 20,000 THB and pack down into a backpack-sized bag for storage. For short stays, renting at 300 to 500 THB per hour is the practical choice. Many beach hotels also include SUP boards as a complimentary activity for guests, so check with your accommodation before renting elsewhere.
