Getting Around Phuket: Transport Options

Transport in Phuket

Getting around Phuket can be one of the more frustrating aspects of visiting the island, especially compared to Bangkok or Chiang Mai where public transport is extensive. Phuket lacks a proper public transit system, and the distances between beaches, towns, and attractions are significant. Understanding your options helps you plan efficiently and avoid overpaying.

Grab (Ride-Hailing App)

Grab is the Southeast Asian equivalent of Uber and is the most reliable, transparent transport option in Phuket.

  • How it works: Download the Grab app, enter your destination, get a fare quote, and book a car. Payment can be by cash or card.
  • Typical fares: Patong to Phuket Old Town: 300 to 450 THB. Patong to airport: 600 to 800 THB. Kata to Chalong Pier: 200 to 300 THB.
  • Pros: Fixed price before booking (no negotiation), GPS tracking, driver accountability, air-conditioned car.
  • Cons: Availability can be limited in remote areas or during peak demand (New Year, Songkran). Surge pricing during high demand.
  • Tip: Book Grab in advance for airport transfers or early morning pickups for tours.

Motorbike Rental

The most popular independent transport option among tourists.

  • Cost: 250 to 350 THB per day for a 125cc scooter. Discounts for weekly rental.
  • Requirements: An international driving permit (IDP) with motorcycle endorsement is technically required. In practice, many rental shops do not ask, but police checkpoints do. Riding without a license can result in a 500 THB fine and invalidated travel insurance.
  • Pros: Freedom to explore at your own pace, cheapest per-day option, easy parking.
  • Cons: Dangerous if inexperienced, Phuket's hills and traffic are challenging, sunburn while riding, insurance complications if injured.
  • Essential safety rules: Always wear a helmet, never drink and ride, avoid riding at night, check brakes and lights before riding, stay left.

Tuk-Tuks

Phuket's tuk-tuks are red enclosed vehicles (not the three-wheeled Bangkok variety). They are essentially shared taxis.

  • Cost: 200 to 500 THB for common routes. Prices are fixed by a local association and are not metered.
  • Pros: Available at all major beaches and tourist areas without needing an app.
  • Cons: Expensive for what they are. A tuk-tuk ride from Patong to Karon (5 kilometers) costs about the same as a Grab for a longer distance. Prices are non-negotiable and set high.
  • Tip: Tuk-tuks are fine for short hops when Grab is unavailable, but Grab is almost always better value for longer distances.

Songthaew (Local Bus)

Songthaews are converted pickup trucks with bench seating in the back, operating as shared buses along fixed routes.

  • Routes: The main route runs from Phuket Town to the major west coast beaches (Patong, Karon, Kata). They run from approximately 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
  • Cost: 30 to 50 THB per person per ride.
  • Pros: Very cheap, authentic local experience.
  • Cons: Infrequent (every 30 to 60 minutes), limited routes, stop running in the late afternoon, slow (they stop frequently), not air-conditioned, can be crowded.
  • Tip: Good for one-way trips between Phuket Town and the beaches during daytime. Not practical as a primary transport method.

Car Rental

Renting a car gives you the comfort and flexibility of private transport.

  • Cost: 1,000 to 2,000 THB per day for a basic sedan. SUVs and minivans cost more.
  • Requirements: International driving permit and passport. Minimum age 21 at most agencies.
  • Pros: Air conditioning, secure storage for belongings, comfortable for families, safer than motorbikes.
  • Cons: Parking can be difficult in Patong and popular beaches, traffic congestion during peak hours, driving on the left may be unfamiliar.
  • Tip: Book online through international agencies (Budget, Avis, Hertz) or local agencies. Check insurance coverage carefully. Full coverage insurance is worth the extra cost.

Airport Transfers

Phuket International Airport is in the north of the island. Transfer options:

  • Grab: 600 to 900 THB to most beach areas.
  • Airport taxi counter: Fixed prices by zone, 650 to 1,000 THB. Safe and reliable.
  • Hotel transfer: 800 to 2,000 THB depending on the hotel. Convenient but expensive.
  • Airport bus: 100 to 150 THB to Phuket Town only. Limited schedule.
  • Minibus: Shared minibus services to major beaches, 200 to 300 THB. May make multiple stops.

Island Tour Transfers

Most island tours include hotel pickup and drop-off in their price. This means you do not need to arrange transport to the departure pier. See our guide on how hotel pickup works for details.

Our Recommendations

  • Primary transport: Grab for most trips. Reliable and fair pricing.
  • Exploration: Rent a car if you want to explore the island independently, especially with family.
  • Budget option: Motorbike if you are an experienced rider with a proper license.
  • Avoid: Relying solely on tuk-tuks, as they are overpriced compared to alternatives.

Getting around Phuket takes some planning, but with the right approach it does not have to be stressful or expensive. Download Grab before you arrive, and you will have a reliable transport option ready from the moment you land. For island excursions with included transfers, browse our tour options.
