James Bond Island: Everything You Need to Know

What Is James Bond Island?

James Bond Island, officially called Khao Phing Kan, is a limestone formation in Phang Nga Bay, about 25 kilometers northeast of Phuket. It became internationally famous after appearing in the 1974 James Bond film "The Man with the Golden Gun" starring Roger Moore. The island's most recognizable feature is Ko Tapu, a 20-meter tall needle-shaped rock that rises vertically out of the shallow water just offshore.

Today, James Bond Island is one of the most popular day trip destinations from Phuket. It is part of the Ao Phang Nga National Park, a protected marine area featuring over 40 islands, mangrove forests, sea caves, and dramatic karst limestone formations.

How to Visit James Bond Island from Phuket

Longtail Boat Tours

Traditional longtail boats depart from various piers around Phang Nga Bay. This is the most authentic way to experience the bay. Tours typically include stops at James Bond Island, Koh Panyee (the floating Muslim village), and sea caves. Longtail boat tours are slower but offer a more relaxed experience.

Speedboat Tours

A James Bond Island speedboat tour gets you to the bay faster and covers more ground. Most speedboat tours include kayaking through sea caves, a visit to Koh Panyee, and stops at James Bond Island and other scenic spots in the bay. A typical speedboat tour runs from roughly 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Big Boat (Junk) Tours

Some operators use larger traditional-style boats or modern cruise boats. These are slower but very comfortable, often including buffet lunch and more deck space. Good for families or those who prefer stability over speed.

Private Tours

A private speedboat charter through Phang Nga Bay gives you the freedom to spend more time at the spots you enjoy most and skip the crowds at popular locations.

What to Expect at James Bond Island

When you arrive at Khao Phing Kan, your boat will anchor in the shallow water near the beach. You walk onto a small sandy area and follow a short trail through the limestone formations. The trail leads to a viewpoint where you can see Ko Tapu, the famous needle rock, rising from the water.

The island itself is not large. Most groups spend 20 to 30 minutes here, which is enough time to take photos, explore the small caves on the island, and browse the souvenir stalls set up by local vendors. The best photos of Ko Tapu are taken from the eastern side of the island, where the rock stands dramatically against the bay.

Kayaking in Phang Nga Bay

Most James Bond Island tours include a kayaking segment, which is often the highlight of the trip. You will paddle through narrow sea caves (called "hongs") that open into hidden lagoons surrounded by towering limestone walls. The water inside these lagoons is calm and shallow, and the experience of emerging from a dark cave into a sunlit lagoon is truly memorable.

Common kayaking spots include Tham Lod (a cave you paddle through) and various hong formations around the bay. Even if you have never kayaked before, the calm waters of Phang Nga Bay make it easy and safe. Guides paddle with you and assist as needed. Koh Panyee: The Floating Village

Almost every James Bond Island tour stops at Koh Panyee, a village built on stilts over the water by Muslim fishermen who settled here generations ago. Today about 1,500 people live in the village. You can walk through the narrow wooden walkways, visit the mosque, eat lunch at one of the seafood restaurants, and see the famous floating football pitch where local kids play.

Lunch at Koh Panyee typically features Thai seafood dishes. The food is decent and reasonably priced. Some tours include lunch in the package, while others have you pay at the restaurant directly.

Costs

  • Group speedboat tour: 2,000 to 3,500 THB per person
  • Longtail boat tour: 1,200 to 2,500 THB per person
  • Big boat tour: 1,500 to 2,500 THB per person
  • Private speedboat charter: 20,000 to 50,000 THB per boat
  • National park entrance fee: 300 THB for foreign adults, 150 THB for children

Most group tours include hotel pickup and drop-off, lunch, drinking water, kayaking equipment, and life jackets.

Best Time to Visit

Phang Nga Bay is more sheltered than the open ocean, so tours run year round. However, the best conditions are from November to April during the dry season. Even during the rainy season (May to October), Phang Nga Bay is usually calm enough for tours, though you may experience afternoon rain showers.

For the best experience, try to arrive at James Bond Island early in the morning before the large tour groups. Tours departing at 7:30 or 8:00 AM tend to reach the island with fewer crowds.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Bring insect repellent. The mangrove areas of the bay have mosquitoes, especially in the late afternoon.
  • Wear quick-dry clothing. You will get wet during kayaking.
  • Bring a waterproof phone case or dry bag. Essential for kayaking and speedboat transfers.
  • Do not feed the fish or monkeys you may encounter at the islands.
  • Bring cash for souvenirs at James Bond Island and food at Koh Panyee.
