Koh Yao Noi: The Quiet Side of Phang Nga

A Different Kind of Thai Island

Koh Yao Noi is an island in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, roughly equidistant between Phuket and Krabi. While its neighbors attract the masses with party beaches and packed tour boats, Koh Yao Noi has remained remarkably peaceful and undeveloped. The island is home to a predominantly Muslim fishing community that has lived here for generations, and the pace of life reflects that heritage: slow, gentle, and grounded in tradition.

There are no shopping malls, no nightclubs, and no crowded beaches. Instead, you find rice paddies, rubber plantations, quiet roads perfect for cycling, and small beaches where you might be the only person for hours. Koh Yao Noi was recognized by the community-based tourism awards for its sustainable approach to tourism, and visiting the island supports a local economy that prioritizes preservation over rapid development.

How to Get to Koh Yao Noi from Phuket

There are two main ways to reach Koh Yao Noi from Phuket:

Public Speedboat

Regular speedboats depart from Bang Rong Pier on Phuket's northeast coast. The crossing takes about 25 to 30 minutes. Boats run several times per day, with the first departing around 7:30 AM and the last around 5:00 PM. The fare is approximately 200 to 300 THB per person one way.

Private Longtail or Speedboat

You can hire a private longtail boat from Bang Rong Pier for 1,500 to 2,500 THB or a speedboat for more. A private charter from Phuket can also include Koh Yao Noi as part of a custom itinerary.

What to Do on Koh Yao Noi

Cycling

This is the best way to explore the island. The main road circles the island and covers about 25 kilometers. It is mostly flat with gentle hills, passing through rice paddies, fishing villages, and coconut groves. Most guesthouses and resorts rent bicycles for 100 to 200 THB per day, and motorbikes for 250 to 350 THB per day.

Kayaking

The calm waters around Koh Yao Noi are perfect for kayaking. You can paddle to nearby mangrove areas, explore the coastline, or even cross to the small neighboring island of Koh Yao Yai (about 2 kilometers away). Many resorts provide complimentary kayaks for guests.

Beach Time

Koh Yao Noi's beaches are not the wide, white sand stretches of the Similans or Phi Phi. They are smaller, more natural, and often deserted. The main beaches include:

  • Pasai Beach: The longest stretch of sand, good for swimming at high tide
  • Tha Khao Bay: Quiet beach with views of Phang Nga's limestone islands
  • Laem Had: A sandbar that extends at low tide, creating a beautiful point

Rock Climbing

There are several limestone cliffs suitable for rock climbing on and around Koh Yao Noi. The climbing scene here is much smaller and less commercial than Railay or Tonsai near Krabi, which appeals to climbers looking for a quieter experience.

Visiting Local Villages

Riding through the island's villages gives you an authentic glimpse of rural Thai island life. You will see fishermen repairing nets, locals harvesting rubber, and children playing in the quiet lanes. The main village has a few small shops, a mosque, and local restaurants serving simple Thai food at local prices (50 to 100 THB per dish).

Day Trips from Koh Yao Noi

Koh Yao Noi's central location in Phang Nga Bay makes it an excellent base for exploring the surrounding area:

  • Hong Islands: A short boat ride away, with stunning lagoons and snorkeling
  • Phang Nga Bay tour: Visit James Bond Island and sea caves from a closer starting point than Phuket
  • Koh Yao Yai: The larger, even quieter sister island is a short crossing away

Where to Stay

Koh Yao Noi has accommodation for every budget:

  • Budget: Simple bungalows and guesthouses from 500 to 1,500 THB per night
  • Mid-range: Boutique resorts with pools from 2,000 to 5,000 THB per night
  • Luxury: High-end resorts including some internationally branded properties, from 8,000 to 30,000+ THB per night

Costs

  • Speedboat from Phuket (Bang Rong): 200 to 300 THB one way
  • Bicycle rental: 100 to 200 THB per day
  • Motorbike rental: 250 to 350 THB per day
  • Local meals: 50 to 150 THB per dish

Best Time to Visit

Koh Yao Noi is accessible year round. The dry season (November to April) offers the best weather for cycling and beach activities. During the rainy season (May to October), you will experience afternoon showers, but mornings are often clear and the island takes on a lush, green beauty. Accommodation prices are significantly lower in the low season.
