Scuba Diving in Phuket for Beginners

Why Learn to Dive in Phuket?

Phuket is one of the most popular places in the world to start scuba diving, and for good reason. The warm water (28 to 30 degrees Celsius year round), excellent visibility, diverse marine life, and abundance of professional dive schools make it an ideal learning environment. Whether you want a one-time try-dive experience or a full certification course, Phuket has options for every level and budget.

Beginner Options

Discover Scuba Diving (DSD)

This is the entry point for anyone who has never dived before. A Discover Scuba Diving experience (offered by PADI, SSI, and other agencies) requires no certification and no prior experience. Here is how it works:

  1. Theory session: 30 to 60 minutes learning basic skills, safety rules, and hand signals.
  2. Confined water practice: Practice breathing underwater, clearing your mask, and basic buoyancy in a pool or shallow area.
  3. Open water dive: One or two dives at a real dive site, accompanied by an instructor at all times. Maximum depth is 12 meters.

Duration: Half day to full day.

Cost: 3,500 to 5,500 THB per person including equipment, boat, and instructor.

Best for: Anyone curious about diving but not ready to commit to a full course.

Open Water Certification (PADI or SSI)

If you want to become a certified diver who can dive independently worldwide, the Open Water course is the standard path. It takes 3 to 4 days and includes:

  1. Theory: Online study (completed before arrival) or classroom sessions covering dive physics, physiology, and planning.
  2. Confined water: Pool sessions practicing all required skills.
  3. Open water dives: Four open water dives at actual dive sites around Phuket.

Duration: 3 to 4 days.

Cost: 12,000 to 18,000 THB including all materials, equipment, and certification card.

Best for: Anyone who wants to continue diving in the future. The certification never expires.

Best Beginner Dive Sites Near Phuket

Koh Racha Yai

The most popular beginner dive site near Phuket. Koh Racha Yai has calm, clear water with gentle sandy slopes perfect for new divers. Bay 1 (Batok Bay) rarely has currents and visibility is usually 15 to 25 meters. You will see clownfish, porcupinefish, moray eels, and blue-spotted stingrays.

Shark Point (Hin Musang)

Despite the name, this site features harmless leopard sharks resting on the sandy bottom. It is suitable for advanced beginners (post-certification) and offers excellent marine diversity including seahorses, nudibranchs, and schooling fish.

Anemone Reef

A reef covered in colorful anemones with clownfish, scorpionfish, and pipefish. Depth ranges from 5 to 26 meters, with the shallower areas suitable for new divers.

King Cruiser Wreck

A large ferry wreck at 12 to 30 meters. The upper sections are accessible to newer certified divers and the wreck is covered in marine growth with abundant fish life.

What to Expect on Your First Dive

Your first breathing underwater moment is unforgettable. Here is what to expect:

  • Breathing: Breathing through a regulator feels unusual at first. Within minutes, it becomes natural. The key is to breathe slowly and deeply.
  • Ears: You will need to equalize the pressure in your ears as you descend, similar to on an airplane. Your instructor will teach you how.
  • Buoyancy: Controlling your position in the water takes practice. Your instructor manages this for you on a DSD experience.
  • Communication: You cannot talk underwater. You use hand signals to communicate with your instructor and buddy.
  • Time underwater: A typical dive lasts 40 to 60 minutes. It feels much shorter because you are absorbed in the experience.

Choosing a Dive School

Phuket has over 100 dive shops. Here is what to look for:

  • Certification agency affiliation: PADI and SSI are the most recognized globally. Look for a registered dive center.
  • Instructor-to-student ratio: Maximum 4 students per instructor for Open Water courses, 2 for DSD experiences.
  • Equipment condition: Well-maintained, modern equipment is essential for safety and comfort.
  • Reviews: Check Google and TripAdvisor reviews, paying attention to recent feedback.
  • Language: Instruction is available in English, Thai, Chinese, Russian, German, French, and other languages.

Health and Safety

  • Medical requirements: You will complete a medical questionnaire. Certain conditions (asthma, heart disease, epilepsy) may require a doctor's clearance.
  • No flying after diving: You must wait at least 18 to 24 hours after diving before flying. Plan your dive days accordingly.
  • No alcohol before diving: Avoid alcohol the night before and morning of your dive.
  • Age requirements: Discover Scuba from age 10, Open Water certification from age 10 (Junior) or 15 (adult).

Costs Summary

  • Discover Scuba Diving: 3,500 to 5,500 THB (1 day)
  • PADI Open Water course: 12,000 to 18,000 THB (3 to 4 days)
  • Fun dives (certified divers): 3,000 to 5,000 THB for 2 dives
  • Advanced Open Water course: 10,000 to 15,000 THB (2 days)
