Tipping Etiquette on Boat Tours in Thailand

Tipping Culture in Thailand
Thailand does not have the same tipping culture as the United States or Europe. Tips are appreciated but not mandatory. Service staff in tourism do not rely entirely on tips for their income, but tips are a welcome supplement, especially for boat crews and tour guides who work long, physically demanding days.
On Group Boat Tours
Your Tour Guide
The guide who leads your group, provides commentary, and assists with snorkeling and activities.
- Suggested tip: 100 to 300 THB per person, given at the end of the tour
- For exceptional service: 300 to 500 THB per person
- How: Cash, given directly or placed in a tip box if one is available on the boat
Boat Crew
The captain and crew who drive the boat, handle equipment, and ensure safety.
- Suggested tip: 50 to 200 THB per person, pooled for the crew
- Many boats have a tip box near the exit where passengers can contribute for the entire crew
Total Tipping Range
For a standard group tour, tipping 200 to 500 THB total per person (split between guide and crew) is generous and appreciated. A couple might tip 400 to 1,000 THB total for the day.
On Private Charters
For private speedboat charters, tipping expectations are slightly higher because the service is more personalized:
- Captain: 500 to 1,000 THB
- Crew/guide: 300 to 500 THB each
- Total for the boat: 1,000 to 2,000 THB for excellent service
When NOT to Tip
- If the service was genuinely poor or unsafe
- If the guide was pushy about selling add-ons or pressured you for purchases
- If you feel uncomfortable. Tipping is never obligatory in Thailand.
Other Tipping Situations in Phuket
- Hotel pickup driver: Not expected. A friendly "khop khun khrap/kha" (thank you) is sufficient.
- Restaurant: Rounding up the bill or leaving 20 to 50 THB. Many restaurants add a 10% service charge already.
- Spa/massage: 50 to 100 THB for a standard massage. 100 to 200 THB for longer treatments.
- Taxi drivers: Not expected. Rounding up to the nearest 20 THB is a nice gesture.
Practical Tips
- Carry small bills. Have 100 THB and 50 THB notes ready. Do not hand over a 1,000 THB note and expect change.
- Tip in Thai baht. Not foreign currency. Tour staff live and spend in Thailand.
- Tip at the end of the tour. Not at the beginning.
- A genuine smile and thank you often means as much as the monetary tip. Thai culture values kindness and warmth.
Tipping on Phuket boat tours is a nice way to show appreciation for the people who make your day possible. It is not mandatory, but it is appreciated. Browse our available tours or contact us if you have other questions about tour etiquette.
