Should You Book Phuket Tours Before or After You Arrive?

Should you lock in your Phuket tours before you fly, or wait and book once you have seen the weather and found your feet? Both approaches work. The right answer depends on when you travel, how fixed your dates are, how big your group is and how much a particular trip matters to you.

We are a booking site, so of course we would like you to book with us, but this guide gives you the honest picture: when booking ahead really matters, when it is fine to wait, and a simple approach that gives you most of the benefits of both.

The Short Answer

• Book ahead for peak holiday weeks, private charters, groups, short trips and any tour you would be upset to miss.
• Wait and book locally in the quieter months, when your dates are flexible, and for activities you could do on any day.
• Do both: book the one or two trips that matter most for early in your stay, with free cancellation, and keep the rest flexible.

When Booking Ahead Makes Sense

Peak holiday periods

December to March is Phuket's busiest time, and the weeks around Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year are the busiest of all. Popular tours and hotels can fill days ahead. See our Christmas and New Year booking tips.

Private speedboat charters

A private speedboat charter uses a whole boat for your group, and there are only so many boats. If you want a specific date, book early. Routes are Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay, the Hong Islands and the 4 Islands of Krabi, with listed prices from 20,000 to 35,000 THB per boat at the time of writing. The booking page shows the current price for your date.

Groups of 6 or more

Finding seats for a large group on the same boat on the same day is much easier with notice, especially in the high season.

Short stays

If you only have three or four days, you do not have spare days to wait for availability. Plan your tour days before you arrive.

Trips with requirements

Some tours have rules that are easier to check at home. On the Jet Ski 7 Islands tour, drivers must be at least 15, the limit is 150 kg per jet ski and you need your passport. The Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai Island tour is not suitable for pregnant women or guests with back problems. Child prices apply to different age ranges on different tours. Reading the tour page before you travel avoids surprises.

When Waiting Is Fine

• The low season, roughly May to October. There are fewer visitors, and many tours have space a day or two ahead.
• The quieter weeks either side of the peak, such as early November and late April, outside holiday dates.
• Flexible dates. If you do not mind which day you go, you will usually find something.
• Activities that do not depend on the sea, such as rafting, cooking classes or a day in Phuket Old Town.

Weather: The Real Reason to Stay Flexible

From roughly May to October, the southwest monsoon brings more rain and rougher seas on the Andaman side. Many days are fine and tours often run, but operators and the national park can change or cancel programs for weather and sea conditions. Routes differ a lot:

• Phang Nga Bay is sheltered and runs all year. The James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay tour is the most dependable boat day in the monsoon.
• Racha and Coral Island run all year when sea conditions allow.
• Phi Phi involves a longer crossing on open water, so it is the most likely to be bumpy or moved.
• Maya Bay usually closes for recovery around August and September each year, on dates set by the national park.

The practical answer is to book the most weather dependent trip for early in your stay, so there is time to move it if needed. Booking ahead and staying flexible are not opposites.

Booking After You Arrive: Your Options

• Online, from your phone. You can see exactly what is included, the pickup window and the cancellation terms before you pay. Browse all tours.
• Your hotel tour desk. Convenient, and staff can help with pickup points. Ask which operator runs the trip and what is included, and compare prices.
• Street tour agents. You will find many in Patong, Kata and Karon. Tour businesses in Thailand need a tourism business licence, often called a TAT licence, so ask to see it, and get a written receipt showing the tour, date, inclusions and pickup time. Whichever way you book, compare like with like. A cheaper price can mean the national park fee, lunch, snorkel gear or hotel transfer are extra. For example, our Phi Phi tour includes the national park fee, while on the James Bond Island tour it is paid in cash on the day.

A Simple Plan That Works

1. Before you fly, pick the one or two trips that matter most and book them for early in your stay.

3. Leave one or two days open for rescheduling, rest or a last minute idea.
4. After you arrive, book extras once you have seen the forecast and how much energy you have.
