Should You Book Tours Before or After Arriving?

Both Approaches Work, But...
You can book island tours either before you arrive in Phuket or after you land. Both approaches have merits, but advance booking is increasingly the better choice for popular tours, especially during high season.
Book in Advance: When and Why
When Advance Booking Is Essential
- Similan Islands in peak season (December to February). Tours have limited daily capacity and sell out days in advance. Book Similan tours at least 1 week ahead.
- Christmas and New Year period. All popular tours can sell out. Book 1 to 2 weeks ahead. See our holiday booking guide.
- Chinese New Year. Similar demand spike.
- Private speedboat charters. Private boats have limited availability and should be booked 1 to 2 weeks ahead, especially in peak season.
- Large groups. If you need seats for 6 or more people on the same tour, book ahead to guarantee space together.
Advantages of Advance Booking
- Guaranteed availability on your preferred date
- Choose the best tour timing (early morning departures fill first)
- Peace of mind: your itinerary is set
- Sometimes better prices through early-booking promotions
- Free cancellation policies let you book risk-free (check terms)
Book After Arriving: When It Works
When Last-Minute Booking Is Fine
- Low season (May to October). Fewer tourists means plenty of availability.
- Shoulder season (November, April). Most tours have availability 1 to 2 days out.
- Coral Island and Phang Nga Bay. These tours have high capacity and rarely sell out completely.
- Flexible dates. If you do not care which day you go, you can usually find something available.
Ways to Book After Arriving
- Online booking platforms: Book from your hotel room on your phone. Browse our available tours.
- Hotel tour desk: Convenient but often marked up 20 to 50% above direct prices.
- Street tour agents: Plentiful in Patong, Kata, and Karon. Prices vary. Negotiate, but be cautious of very cheap operators. Read our avoiding scams guide.
Risks of Last-Minute Booking
- Your preferred tour may be full
- You may end up on a less desirable time slot
- Street agents may not have the best operators
- Weather could limit your rescheduling options
Our Recommendation
For the best experience, we recommend a hybrid approach:
- Book must-do tours in advance: Similan Islands, Phi Phi Islands, and any private charters. Book at least 3 to 7 days ahead (more in peak season).
- Leave flexibility for extras. Keep 1 to 2 days open for spontaneous activities based on weather and mood.
- Book with operators offering free cancellation. This gives you the security of advance booking with the flexibility to change plans.
