Can You Bring Your Own Food on Boat Tours?

Most Tours Include Lunch
Most full-day island tours from Phuket include lunch in the tour price: a Thai-style set menu or buffet. Drinking water and sometimes soft drinks and fruit are also included. But you may want to bring your own food for dietary restrictions, allergies, picky children, or personal preference.
What Tours Typically Include
Full-Day Tours (Phi Phi, James Bond, Similans)
- Breakfast: Some Similan tours include a light breakfast at the pier.
- Lunch: Almost always included. Thai food: fried rice, pad thai, vegetables, chicken, fish, soup, fruit.
- Drinks: Water always included. Some tours offer soft drinks, tea, coffee.
- Snacks: Some operators provide fruit between stops.
Half-Day and Private Tours
Afternoon tours may include snacks but not a full meal. With a private charter, you can discuss food arrangements in advance.
Can You Bring Your Own?
Yes, generally you can bring snacks and food. There is no rule against it.
Good Items to Bring
- Energy bars, granola bars, trail mix
- Crackers and bread
- Fresh fruit
- Sandwiches in sealed bags
- Baby food and formula
- Specific dietary items (gluten-free, halal, etc.)
Avoid Bringing
- Glass bottles. Most boats prohibit glass.
- Strong-smelling food. Shared space.
- Large coolers. Limited space on speedboats.
- Excessive plastic packaging. Be mindful on marine tours.
Dietary Restrictions
- Inform your operator when booking. Many accommodate vegetarian, halal, or allergy-specific meals with notice.
- Vegetarian/vegan: Thai food has many plant-based options. Bring backup snacks.
- Halal: Some operators offer halal meals. Ask when booking.
- Gluten-free: Thai cuisine is rice-based, so many dishes are naturally gluten-free.
- Severe allergies: Thai food uses peanuts, shrimp paste, and fish sauce frequently. Bring your own food and communicate clearly.
Food for Children
Tour meals are Thai food, which some children may not enjoy. Pack sandwiches, fruit, crackers, juice boxes. See our Phuket with kids guide.
Alcohol
Most group tours do not include or allow alcohol. On private charters, you can usually bring your own (confirm with operator).
National Park Rules
Some parks prohibit single-use plastics on beaches. Follow your guide's instructions and take all trash with you.
Bringing snacks is fine and sometimes advisable. Browse our available tours for details on what each trip includes.
