What Happens If It Rains on Your Island Tour?

Rain Is Normal in Phuket
Phuket is a tropical destination. Even during the "dry season" (November to April), brief rain showers can occur. During the rainy season (May to October), afternoon rain is common but rarely lasts all day. Rain alone does not usually cancel tours. It is the sea conditions (waves and wind) that determine whether boats go out.
Scenarios and What Happens
Brief Rain Shower During the Tour
The most common situation. A tropical shower rolls in, lasts 15 to 45 minutes, then the sun returns. Your tour continues as planned. The rain can actually feel refreshing in the tropical heat.
Overcast and Drizzly All Day
Tours still run. The islands are still beautiful, and all water activities continue. The main downside is photos may lack vivid blue skies.
Heavy Storms or Rough Seas
Tours will be cancelled for safety. Reputable operators do not take risks.
What happens to your booking:
- Full refund or free rescheduling
- You are typically notified the evening before or early morning
Rain by Season
November to April (Dry Season)
Rain is infrequent and brief. Tour cancellations due to weather are rare.
May to October (Rainy Season)
Rain is more frequent, typically in the afternoon. Mornings are often clear. Some tours still run, especially to sheltered destinations. Read our rainy season tours guide.
Important: The Similan Islands close entirely from May to October.
Most Weather-Resistant Tours
- James Bond Island / Phang Nga Bay: Sheltered bay. Excellent even in light rain. Runs year-round.
- Coral Island: Very short crossing (15 minutes). Good fallback option.
- Phi Phi Islands: Runs most of the year but may cancel during strong storms.
Tips for Rainy Day Tours
- Do not cancel for light rain. Tropical showers pass quickly.
- Bring a lightweight waterproof jacket for the speedboat ride.
- Use a waterproof phone case.
- Pack belongings in a dry bag.
- Apply sunscreen on cloudy days. UV rays penetrate clouds.
- Be flexible. Do not book your island tour on your last day during rainy season.
The Silver Lining
Rainy days mean fewer tourists at popular spots, lower prices, dramatic cloud formations for photography, cooling relief from tropical heat, and common rainbows after showers.
