Can You Swim at Maya Bay in 2026?

The Short Answer

As of 2026, swimming is not allowed at Maya Bay. Visitors can walk on the beach and wade in ankle-deep water, but full swimming in the bay is prohibited. This rule has been in place since the bay reopened in January 2022 after a nearly four-year closure for ecological restoration.

Why Is Swimming Banned?

Maya Bay was closed from June 2018 to January 2022 because decades of mass tourism had devastated its coral reefs and marine ecosystem. At its peak, up to 5,000 tourists per day were visiting the small bay, and the damage was severe.

During the closure, marine biologists documented a remarkable recovery. Blacktip reef sharks returned to the bay, coral began regrowing, and the overall ecosystem health improved significantly. To protect this recovery, Thai authorities implemented strict new rules when the bay reopened.

Current Rules at Maya Bay

  • No swimming in the bay area
  • Daily visitor cap of approximately 4,000 people
  • Time limit of roughly one hour per visit
  • No boats inside the bay. All vessels must anchor outside and visitors walk through a path on the back of the island
  • No food or drinks on the beach (water is okay)
  • No smoking anywhere on the island
  • No touching or stepping on coral

What Can You Actually Do at Maya Bay?

Even without swimming, Maya Bay is still a breathtaking place to visit. Here is what your experience will look like:

Walk the Beach

The white sand beach is open for walking. You can wade into very shallow water near the shoreline. The beach is smaller than it looks in photos, but the dramatic limestone cliffs towering on three sides create a truly spectacular setting.

Take Photos

The bay is incredibly photogenic. The turquoise water, white sand, and vertical cliff walls make for memorable photos. Early morning visits (before 9:00 AM) offer the best light and fewer people.

Observe Marine Life

From the beach, you can often see blacktip reef sharks swimming in the shallow water. These sharks are harmless to humans and their presence is a sign of the bay's ecological recovery.

Walk the Nature Trail

A boardwalk path crosses through the island's interior from the landing point to the bay. The trail passes through lush vegetation and offers views of the island's geology.

Where CAN You Swim Near Maya Bay?

If swimming is important to you, the good news is that most Phi Phi Islands tours include multiple swimming and snorkeling stops throughout the day. Popular nearby swimming spots include:

  • Pileh Lagoon: An enclosed emerald lagoon on the other side of Phi Phi Leh. Swimming is allowed and the water is warm and calm.
  • Loh Samah Bay: A small bay near Maya Bay with good snorkeling and swimming.
  • Shark Point: A snorkeling spot where you can swim with harmless blacktip reef sharks.
  • Bamboo Island: A flat coral island with a long beach and excellent shallow snorkeling.

Will Swimming Ever Be Allowed Again?

Thai authorities have not announced any plans to lift the swimming ban. The Department of National Parks reviews the rules periodically based on ecological assessments. Given the positive results, it seems unlikely the ban will be removed in the near future.

Tips for Visiting Maya Bay in 2026

  • Book early morning tours. The first boats arrive around 7:30 to 8:00 AM and the bay is less crowded.
  • Go by speedboat. Speedboats from Phuket reach Phi Phi Leh in about 45 to 60 minutes. Check available speedboat tours.
  • Consider a private speedboat for the most flexible schedule.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen. Regular sunscreen is harmful to the recovering coral.
  • Respect the rules. Rangers enforce the regulations and violators can be fined up to 100,000 THB.

How to Get to Maya Bay from Phuket

Maya Bay is on Phi Phi Leh island, about 45 kilometers from Phuket. You need to join a Phi Phi Islands tour or charter a private speedboat. Most day tours include Maya Bay as one of several stops along with Pileh Lagoon, Monkey Beach, and snorkeling spots.

National Park Fees

Maya Bay is inside the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. The entrance fee is 400 THB for foreign adults and 200 THB for children. This fee may be included in your tour price or charged separately. Always confirm with your tour operator. For more, see our Thailand national park fees guide.

While the swimming ban may disappoint some visitors, the trade-off is that Maya Bay looks better today than it has in years. The water is clearer, sharks patrol the shallows, and the coral is growing back. Browse our available tours to plan your Phi Phi Islands visit.
