When Is Low Season in Phuket? (It's Not All Bad)

When Is Low Season?

Phuket's low season (also called green season, rainy season, or monsoon season) runs from approximately May to October. The wettest months are typically September and October, while May and June are transitional.

What Low Season Actually Looks Like

Many tourists imagine constant rain and grey skies. The reality is different:

  • Mornings are often sunny. A typical low-season day starts clear, with clouds building in the afternoon.
  • Rain comes in bursts. Heavy rain for 1 to 3 hours, then it clears. All-day rain is uncommon.
  • Some days are completely dry. You can have stretches of 2 to 3 consecutive sunny days.
  • Temperatures are comfortable: 25 to 31 degrees Celsius. Slightly cooler than the extreme heat of March/April.

The Real Advantages

1. Dramatically Lower Prices

This is the biggest draw. Low-season savings are significant:

  • Hotels: 30 to 60% cheaper than peak season. A hotel that charges 3,000 THB per night in January might be 1,200 THB in July.
  • Tours: Some operators offer 10 to 20% discounts.
  • Flights: International and domestic flights are cheaper.
  • Restaurants: Some restaurants offer low-season promotions.

2. Fewer Tourists

Popular spots that are packed in high season are pleasantly quiet. Maya Bay, Phang Nga Bay, and popular beaches have a fraction of peak-season visitors. This transforms the experience: more space, less waiting, better photos, more personal attention from guides.

3. Lush Green Scenery

The rain makes everything brilliantly green. Hills, forests, and gardens are at their most vibrant.

4. Better Hotel Availability

Get rooms at top hotels that are fully booked in high season. Upgrades are more likely too.

Which Tours Run in Low Season?

  • Phang Nga Bay: Runs year-round. Sheltered water. Best low-season option.
  • Coral Island: Usually available. Short crossing.
  • Phi Phi Islands: Runs but with weather-dependent cancellations.
  • Similan Islands: Closed. May to October.
  • Surin Islands: Closed.

Safety Considerations

  • West coast beaches have dangerous undertows during monsoon. Red flags mean no swimming. Obey them.
  • East coast beaches are calmer. Ao Yon, Panwa Beach, and Chalong Bay are safer for swimming.
  • Boat trips may be cancelled. Be flexible with your schedule.

Tips for Low Season

  • Schedule outdoor activities in the morning when skies are typically clearest.
  • Have indoor backup plans: cooking classes, spa treatments, temple visits, Old Town exploration, shopping.
  • Book tours with free rescheduling for weather cancellations.
  • Bring a rain jacket and waterproof bag for electronics.
  • Take advantage of hotel deals. This is when you get five-star hotels at three-star prices.
  • Consider travel insurance that covers weather disruptions.

Low season is not for everyone, but for budget-conscious travelers who are flexible and can handle some rain, it offers a completely different Phuket experience at a fraction of peak-season cost. Browse our available tours or contact us for low-season advice.
