Phuket in January: Weather, Tours and What to Expect

January is the middle of Phuket's dry season and one of the most reliable months of the year for island trips. Days are usually sunny, the sea on the Andaman side is calm on most days, and every tour we sell runs on a normal schedule. The trade-off is that you share it with a lot of other people: January is peak season, and popular stops and hotels are at their busiest.

This guide covers what January weather is usually like, how busy it gets, which tours suit the month best and how to plan a week so you get the good parts without the queues.

What the Weather Is Like in January

Phuket has two broad seasons: the dry season, roughly November to April, and the southwest monsoon, roughly May to October. January sits right in the dry half. The wind usually blows from the northeast, across the mainland, so the Andaman Sea off Phuket's west coast is generally flat and the air feels a little less humid than later in the year.

• Temperature: daytime highs usually around 31 to 33°C, with nights around 23 to 25°C. Early mornings and evenings are the most comfortable part of the day.
• Rain: January is usually one of the two driest months of the year. A short shower is possible, but whole rainy days are uncommon.
• Sea: calm on most days, which suits speedboat crossings and snorkeling. The water is warm all year, usually around 28 to 30°C.

A windy spell can still make a crossing bumpy, and the captain always has the final say, but weather cancellations are much less common than in the monsoon months. If your trip starts in late December, read Phuket in December as well, and if it runs into the next month, see Phuket in February.

Crowds and Prices in January

January is part of the busiest stretch of the year, which usually runs from late December to March. The first days of the month still belong to the Christmas and New Year holiday peak. After that it stays busy with winter visitors from many countries, and it can get busier again in years when Chinese New Year falls at the end of the month.

• Hotels: usually at or near their highest rates of the year. Book early if you have a particular place in mind.
• Tours: they run every day, but popular dates fill up. Booking a few days ahead gives you the widest choice.
• Famous stops: Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and James Bond Island are at their busiest from late morning to early afternoon.

Which Tours Suit January

In January every tour we sell is a good choice, so you can pick by interest rather than by weather.

• For clear water: Phi Phi and Racha. Both routes cross more open sea, so they benefit most from the calm season.
• For scenery: Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island, which run all year.
• For families: Raya and Coral Island, with short boat rides.

Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai Island

This is the trip most first-time visitors choose. The crossing to Phi Phi is on the most open water of all our trips, so it gains the most from January's calm conditions. The Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai Island speedboat tour (child price for ages 4 to 11) stops at Khai Nai, Monkey Beach, Phi Phi Don for lunch, Viking Cave, Pileh Lagoon and Loh Sama Bay, where you walk to Maya Bay on a boardwalk. Maya Bay is usually open in January, but swimming there is not allowed. The national park fee is included.

James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is sheltered in every season, so you do not need January for it, but clear skies make the limestone towers look their best. The James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay tour (child price for ages 3 to 11) includes a sea canoe at Hong Island or Talu Island depending on the tide, and lunch at Koh Panyee. The national park fee is not included and is paid on the day. The water in the bay is green rather than turquoise, so choose this trip for scenery, not snorkeling.

Raya and Coral Island

Racha Yai, often called Raya, has some of the clearest water you can reach on a day trip from Phuket, and January is a good month to see it. The Raya and Coral Island snorkeling tour (child price for ages 4 to 11) leaves from Chalong Pier and each boat ride is short. The guide picks the snorkeling bay at Racha on the day.

Jet ski, rafting and private charters

The Jet Ski 7 Islands tour (priced per jet ski for 1 or 2 riders) runs on the sheltered east coast and works well in January. White water rafting in the Phang Nga jungle is a good change from boat days, although the river can be lower in the dry months, so the ride may be gentler. For groups, a private speedboat charter lets you reach the famous stops before or after the main tour boats, which matters most in peak season.

The Similan Islands

The Similan Islands national park is usually open from around 15 October to around 15 May, so it is open in January. We do not sell a Similan tour, but our Similan Islands guide explains how the trip works.

Events in January

• New Year: 1 January is a public holiday, and the first few days of the month still feel like the holiday peak, with full hotels and busy beaches.
• Chinese New Year: the date follows the lunar calendar and falls between late January and mid-February. In 2027 the first day is 6 February, so it lands in February that year. How to Plan a January Week

• Book early for peak dates. Hotels first, then the tours that matter most to you. Bookings close 12 hours before departure, but the best dates can fill before that.
• Space out the long days. Phi Phi takes about 10 hours door to door and James Bond Island about 9. A beach day in between helps.
• Still keep one spare day. Cancellations are rare in January, but not impossible. If we cancel a tour for unsafe weather, you get a full refund or a new date at no extra cost.

What to Pack for January

• Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. The sun is strong on a boat deck even when the breeze feels cool, and a rash guard is the easiest protection on snorkel stops.
• Light, breathable clothes.
• Swimwear, a quick-dry towel and a dry bag or waterproof phone pouch for boat days.
• Sandals or water shoes that grip on wet boat decks and landings.
• Some cash for small purchases and, on the James Bond Island tour, the national park fee.
• Seasickness tablets if you are prone to it. Even on calm days there can be some swell on the way to Phi Phi.
