Phuket in April: Songkran and Island Tours

April Weather
April is the hottest month in Phuket. Temperatures regularly hit 34 to 36 degrees Celsius, and humidity starts to climb as the monsoon season approaches.
Key Stats
- Temperature: 27 to 36 degrees Celsius
- Rain: Increasing. Expect 8 to 12 rainy days, mostly brief afternoon showers.
- Sea conditions: Generally calm, but occasional swells start appearing toward late April.
- Visibility: Still good for snorkeling (15 to 20 meters) but slightly less clear than January to March.
Tour Availability
All tours still operate in April:
- Phi Phi Islands, James Bond Island, and Coral Island tours run daily.
- Similan Islands are open until approximately May 15. If visiting in late April, this could be your last chance for the season.
- Surin Islands are also in their final weeks.
Important: If Similan Islands are on your list, April is the last full month of access before they close for monsoon season.
Songkran Festival
Songkran, the Thai New Year water festival, takes place from April 13 to 15 (celebrations often extend a few days in tourist areas). This is one of the most vibrant times to be in Phuket.
What Happens
- Water fights everywhere. In Patong, Phuket Town, and major roads, people throw water at each other. Everyone gets soaked. It is a joyful, chaotic celebration.
- Temple ceremonies: Thai families visit temples, pour water over Buddha statues, and pay respects to elders.
- Street parties: Bangla Road in Patong turns into a massive water fight with music and dancing.
Impact on Tours
- Island tours still operate during Songkran. In fact, being on a boat tour is a good way to escape the water chaos on land.
- Expect heavier traffic around Songkran dates, which may affect hotel pickup times.
- Some tour operators may have staff holidays. Book in advance.
- Thai domestic tourism surges during Songkran. Tours and hotels can be very busy.
Prices
April is considered the tail end of high season transitioning to shoulder season. Prices for tours remain similar to peak season. Hotels may offer slightly lower rates compared to December to February, except during Songkran week when prices spike.
Tips for April
- Stay hydrated. The heat is intense. Drink water constantly.
- Bring extra sun protection. Stronger sunscreen, hats, rash guards.
- Book Similan Islands early. This is your last chance before the 5-month closure.
- Embrace Songkran. Do not fight the water. Wear clothes you do not mind getting soaked. Protect your phone in a waterproof case.
- Protect electronics. During Songkran, water is thrown everywhere. Keep cameras and phones in waterproof bags.
April is a great time for island tours with warm (very warm) weather and good conditions. The Songkran festival adds a unique cultural dimension to your trip. Browse our available tours to plan your April visit.
