Phuket in July: Monsoon Season Travel Guide
Best Phuket GuideApril 7, 2026

July Weather Reality
July is in the middle of Phuket's monsoon (rainy) season. But "monsoon" does not mean constant rain. Here is what actually happens:
Key Stats
- Temperature: 25 to 31 degrees Celsius. Slightly cooler than April.
- Rain: 15 to 20 rainy days in the month. But rain typically comes in bursts: a heavy downpour lasting 1 to 3 hours, usually in the afternoon. Mornings are often clear and sunny.
- Humidity: High (75 to 85%)
- Sea conditions: Rougher than dry season. West coast beaches (Patong, Kata, Karon) have significant surf and strong undertows. Red flags on beaches should be taken seriously.
Which Tours Still Run?
Available
- James Bond Island / Phang Nga Bay: Runs year-round. The bay is sheltered, making it the best tour option in monsoon season.
- Coral Island: Usually available. Short crossing on the sheltered east side.
- Phi Phi Islands: Operates but with more frequent cancellations. Depends on daily sea conditions.
- Private speedboats: Available to sheltered destinations.
Closed
- Similan Islands: Closed from May to October. No exceptions.
- Surin Islands: Closed.
Day-by-Day Reality
On any given day in July, the tour situation might look like this: Phang Nga Bay tours depart as normal, Phi Phi tours are running but with a weather advisory, and your tour operator messages you the evening before to confirm. Some days everything runs smoothly. Other days, open-water tours are cancelled. Flexibility is key.
The Advantages of July
- Significantly lower prices. Hotels drop rates by 30 to 60% compared to peak season. Tour prices may also be discounted.
- Fewer tourists. Popular spots that are packed in January are pleasantly uncrowded.
- Lush green scenery. The monsoon rain makes everything green and vibrant.
- Dramatic skies. Photographers love the moody cloud formations and sunsets.
- Warm water. Water temperature is still 28 to 29 degrees Celsius.
The Disadvantages
- Rough seas on the west coast. Swimming at west-facing beaches can be dangerous. Always check flag warnings.
- Tour cancellations. Budget extra days in case of weather disruptions.
- Some tours unavailable. No Similan or Surin Islands.
- Afternoon rain. Outdoor plans in the afternoon may be disrupted.
Tips for July
- Book Phang Nga Bay as your priority tour. It is the most reliable option.
- Schedule tours early in your trip. Leave buffer days for rescheduling.
- Swim at east coast beaches. East side is calmer: Ao Yon, Panwa Beach, Cape Panwa.
- Bring a rain jacket. Light and packable for afternoon showers.
- Enjoy indoor activities. Cooking classes, spa days, temples, and Phuket Old Town are great rainy-day options.
- Book with operators offering free rescheduling for weather cancellations.
July in Phuket is a trade-off: lower prices and fewer crowds in exchange for less predictable weather. If you are flexible and focus on sheltered destinations, you can still have an excellent trip. Browse our available tours or read our rainy season tours guide.
