Phuket Old Town: Walking Tour Guide

Why Visit Phuket Old Town?

While most visitors come to Phuket for beaches and island tours, Phuket Old Town (also called Phuket Town) offers a completely different experience. This historic district in the heart of the island showcases beautifully preserved Sino-Portuguese architecture from the 19th century tin mining era, when Chinese immigrants and European traders shaped the culture and commerce of the region.

Today, Phuket Old Town is a vibrant neighborhood of colorful shophouses, street art, temples, local markets, cafes, and some of the best food on the island. A walking tour here gives you a deeper understanding of Phuket beyond the beach resort experience.

Self-Guided Walking Route

This route covers the main highlights and takes about 2 to 3 hours at a relaxed pace. Start in the morning to avoid the midday heat.

Stop 1: Thalang Road

Begin your walk on Thalang Road, one of the main historic streets. The road is lined with restored Sino-Portuguese shophouses painted in pastel shades of yellow, blue, pink, and green. Many have been converted into cafes, galleries, and boutiques while maintaining their original architectural details: arched doorways, decorative plasterwork, and interior courtyards.

Stop 2: Soi Romanee

Turn into Soi Romanee, a narrow lane that was once the island's red-light district during the tin mining days. Today it is one of the most photographed streets in Phuket, with beautifully restored buildings in vibrant colors. There are several small cafes and art galleries here. The street is best photographed in the morning light.

Stop 3: Thai Hua Museum

Located on Krabi Road, the Thai Hua Museum is housed in a stunning blue and white Sino-Portuguese building that was formerly a Chinese language school. The museum tells the story of Phuket's Chinese community and the tin mining era through photographs, artifacts, and interactive displays. Entry is 200 THB for adults.

Stop 4: Shrine of the Serene Light (Sang Tham Shrine)

Hidden down a narrow alley off Phang Nga Road, this Chinese shrine is one of the oldest on the island. The ornate interior features carved wood, gold leaf, and traditional Chinese religious elements. It is a peaceful spot away from the street noise.

Stop 5: Phang Nga Road Street Art

Phang Nga Road features several large-scale murals painted by Thai and international artists. The street art depicts scenes from Phuket's history, local daily life, and cultural themes. Some notable pieces include a giant tin miner portrait and a colorful scene of the Vegetarian Festival.

Stop 6: Dibuk Road

Walk down Dibuk Road to see more classic Sino-Portuguese architecture. This street has some of the best-preserved buildings in the old town, including former mansions of wealthy tin barons. Several upscale restaurants serving Southern Thai and Peranakan cuisine are located here.

Stop 7: Jui Tui Shrine

One of the most important Chinese shrines in Phuket, Jui Tui plays a central role in the annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival held in September or October. The shrine is colorful and ornate, with dragon motifs and burning incense. Photography is allowed, but be respectful of worshippers.

Stop 8: Rang Hill (Khao Rang)

If you have the energy, the walk (or short drive) up Rang Hill rewards you with a panoramic view over Phuket Town and the surrounding area. At the top you will find a small park with a cafe, a fitness park, and a statue of a former governor. It is an excellent spot to cool off and catch your breath before heading back down.

What to Eat in Phuket Old Town

Phuket Old Town is a food lover's paradise. Here are must-try dishes:

  • Mee Hokkien: Stir-fried Hokkien noodles in a rich broth, a Phuket specialty not found in this style elsewhere in Thailand. Try it at Lock Tien food court on Dibuk Road.
  • Oh Tao (Oyster Omelette): Crispy omelette with small oysters, a popular street food.
  • Moo Hong: Slow-braised pork belly in a sweet, peppery sauce. A Phuket Peranakan classic.
  • Roti: Thai-style roti (flatbread) with condensed milk, banana, or egg. Available from street vendors throughout the old town.
  • Local coffee shops: Phuket has a strong coffee culture dating from the tin mining era. Try the traditional Thai coffee (kopitiam style) at one of the old-school coffee shops.

Sunday Walking Street Market

Every Sunday evening from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Thalang Road closes to traffic and transforms into a lively walking street market. Vendors sell local food, handicrafts, clothing, and souvenirs. There are live music performances and the atmosphere is festive. This is one of the best free things to do in Phuket.

Practical Information

  • Getting there: Phuket Old Town is in central Phuket. A taxi or Grab car from Patong takes about 30 to 40 minutes and costs 400 to 600 THB. From the airport, it is about 45 minutes.
  • Best time to visit: Early morning (8:00 to 10:00 AM) for photography and cooler temperatures, or Sunday evening for the walking street market.
  • How long to spend: 2 to 4 hours for a thorough walking tour, longer if you visit museums and eat at multiple spots.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: The walking surfaces are uneven in places.
  • Bring water: It gets hot. Duck into air-conditioned cafes as needed.

Combining Old Town with Other Activities

Phuket Old Town pairs well with other activities on the same day. You could do a morning walking tour, have lunch in the old town, and then head to a afternoon island tour or beach. Alternatively, visit the old town on a rest day between more active island-hopping days.

For a full Phuket experience that goes beyond the beaches, spending a morning in the old town is essential. It is the cultural heart of the island and offers a perspective on Phuket that most tourists miss entirely. See our 3 day Phuket itinerary for suggestions on fitting it all in.
