The Hong Islands (meaning "room" in Thai, for the enclosed lagoons inside the limestone formations) are one of the most breathtaking and most often overlooked destinations near Phuket. This route is perfect for those who want dramatic natural beauty without the larger crowds of Phi Phi. HONG ISLAND LAGOON (KOH HONG) The star of this route. Koh Hong contains an astonishing enclosed lagoon, accessible only through a narrow channel at certain tides. Once inside, you are surrounded by towering limestone walls open to the sky. The water is mirror-calm and brilliantly clear, reflecting the green jungle above. It is one of the most magical natural spaces in Thailand. We time our visit to coincide with accessible tide conditions. HONG NANG (SECONDARY LAGOON) A second, smaller lagoon adjacent to the main one. Less visited, just as beautiful. The coral gardens around the entrance are exceptional for snorkeling, with high fish diversity in a very healthy reef system. LADING ISLAND (KOH LADING) A quiet, untouched island with a pristine white-sand beach and excellent snorkeling on the surrounding reef. Often completely empty. You may well have the whole beach to yourselves. The water is crystal-clear and shallow, ideal for swimming with children. PAKBIA ISLAND (KOH PAKBIA) A small, forested island at the entrance to the Hong Islands group. The beach here faces west, making it ideal for late-afternoon visits with golden light over the water. Snorkeling off the rocky headlands reveals colorful coral and abundant marine life.
