Free Cancellation on Phuket Tours: What to Look For

Plans change on holiday. Someone gets a stomach bug, a flight is delayed or the forecast for your Phi Phi day looks grim. A clear cancellation policy means a change of plan costs you nothing, or at least you know in advance what it will cost. This guide explains the terms that matter when you book a tour in Phuket, how weather cancellations work, and exactly how our own policy works.

Our cancellation terms in brief

• Most tours: cancel more than 24 hours before departure for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours of departure are non-refundable.
• Tours with their own operator terms: some partner operators set their own terms, which are shown on the tour page. Two examples:
  • Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai Island: free cancellation until 23:59 on the day before your trip. Same-day cancellation is not possible, except with a medical certificate from a hospital. Changing your travel date costs 300 THB per person.
  • Jet Ski 7 Islands: free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. No-shows are charged 100% of the booking.
• Always read the tour page and our terms before you book, especially for private speedboat charters and group bookings, so you know which terms apply to your trip.

What free cancellation actually means

Free cancellation always comes with a deadline, and the detail is in how that deadline is measured. With a 24 hour window, you count back from the departure time on your booking, not from the end of the previous day. If your tour leaves at 07:30 on Saturday, you need to cancel before 07:30 on Friday for a full refund. An evening decision on Friday is too late.

The Phi Phi tour works differently: you can cancel for free until 23:59 on the day before, so in the same example you would have until midnight on Friday. Neither rule is better or worse. The point is to know which one applies and to put the deadline in your calendar when you book.

What to check before you book any tour

• The deadline for a full refund, and whether it is counted from departure time or from a fixed clock time.
• Same-day rules. Can you cancel on the day at all? Is there an exception for illness, and what proof is needed? On the Phi Phi tour, for example, it is a hospital medical certificate.
• No-shows. If you miss the pickup, you should expect to lose the full amount.
• Date changes. Moving to another day may be free, may carry a fee, or may depend on availability. On the Phi Phi tour, a date change costs 300 THB per person.
• Weather. Who decides whether the trip runs, and what you get if it does not.
• Group changes. If one person in your group cannot go, can you reduce the numbers? Ask before you book if it matters.
• Written terms. Make sure the policy is in writing on the booking page or your confirmation email, and keep a copy.

Weather cancellations are different from your own

This is the part that confuses most travelers. There are two very different situations:

When the trip is cancelled for weather

The captain and operator decide on the day based on sea state, wind and the forecast, and the national park can also close areas or change rules. Operators can change or cancel programs for weather and sea conditions. If we cancel your tour because of unsafe weather, our terms give you a full refund or a new date at no extra cost. Itineraries can also change on the day, for example if a stop is swapped for a calmer one or a national park site is closed. Maya Bay, for instance, usually closes for recovery around August and September each year.

When you cancel because of the forecast

If you decide not to go because the forecast looks poor, that counts as your own cancellation, and the normal deadline applies. It is worth knowing that forecasts during the monsoon often show rain every day, while in reality many days bring sunny spells between showers, and the sea state matters more than rain. Red flags when booking anywhere in Phuket

• No written policy. If the terms are only verbal, you have little to fall back on.
• Pressure to pay right now, with no time to read what you are buying.
• Vague inclusions. A cheap price can hide extra costs such as national park fees, lunch or transfers. Compare what is included, not only the headline price.

How to book flexibly

• Book the most weather-dependent trip early in your stay. Phi Phi has the most open crossing of our tours, so doing it early leaves time to move it. Phang Nga Bay is sheltered and runs all year, which makes the James Bond Island tour a reliable choice for later in the week.
• Keep a spare day without boat trips, so a moved tour has somewhere to go.
• Set a reminder for each cancellation deadline as soon as you book.
