Kata and Karon beaches are on the southwest coast of Phuket, about 17 kilometers south of Patong. These quieter beach areas are popular with families and couples. For island tours, Kata and Karon are actually well-positioned, being closer to Chalong Pier than Patong is.

All major tour operators include free pickup from Kata and Karon. These areas are firmly in the standard pickup zone. No surcharge applies.

• To Chalong Pier: 15 to 20 minutes (Coral Island, Racha Island, some Phi Phi tours)
• To Rassada Pier: 30 to 40 minutes (ferries, some Phi Phi tours)

• To Tap Lamu Pier: 2 to 2.5 hours (Similan Islands)

Kata and Karon are the closest tourist areas to Chalong Pier. This means:

• Shorter morning drive for tours departing from Chalong
• Earlier return to your hotel in the evening
• Coral Island trips are especially convenient, with only 15 minutes to the pier

Kata vs Karon: Any Difference?

For tour purposes, there is minimal difference. Both are in the same zone and pickup times are within 5 to 10 minutes of each other. Kata Beach is slightly further south, so Karon pickups are marginally earlier, but the difference is negligible.

Tips

• Confirm your exact pickup time the evening before.
• The hill between Kata and Patong can have traffic in the morning. Tour operators account for this.
• Kata Noi (the small bay south of Kata) is also in the standard pickup zone.
• Big Buddha viewpoint and Wat Chalong are both near your area if you want pre or post-tour activities.
