Island Tours from Kata and Karon: Pickup Times, Piers and Best Trips

Kata and Karon sit next to each other on Phuket's southwest coast, a short drive south of Patong. They are popular with families and couples who want a beach base that is a little calmer than Patong, and they work well for island tours too. The one thing to understand is that Phuket's tour boats do not leave from the beach in front of your hotel. They leave from piers on the south and east coasts, and a minibus or car collects you from your hotel in the morning.

This guide explains which piers the tours we sell use, roughly how long the drive takes from Kata and Karon, what time you are likely to be collected, and which trips are the easiest from this side of the island. Prices below are standard rates at the time of writing and can vary by date, so check the tour page for yours.

Where Island Tours Leave From

Almost every island day trip from Phuket starts from one of two areas:

• Chalong Pier on the south coast. This is the base for trips to Coral Island and Racha, including our Raya and Coral Island snorkeling tour. From Kata and Karon it is usually a drive of around 15 to 25 minutes.
• Piers on the east coast. Trips to Phi Phi, the Khai Islands, Phang Nga Bay and the Naka Islands generally leave from the east side of the island, which faces those destinations. Depending on the pier and the traffic through Chalong and Phuket Town, the drive from Kata or Karon is often somewhere between 40 and 70 minutes.

The Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai Island tour, the James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay tour and the jet ski tour all start on the east coast. The white water rafting trip heads north by road into Phang Nga province, the longest drive of the day tours. For private charters, the departure pier is confirmed before your trip. All drive times are estimates, and morning traffic around the Chalong circle can add time.

Pickup Times from Kata and Karon

These are the pickup windows listed on each tour. Where you fall in the window depends on your hotel's place in the driver's route, and the exact time is confirmed the evening before.

• Raya and Coral Island: between 07:30 and 08:45 depending on your area, back around 16:00.
• Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai Island: between 07:30 and 08:30, back around 17:30.
• James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay: between 07:30 and 08:00, back around 17:00.
• White water rafting, flying fox and waterfall: between 07:30 and 08:00.
• Jet Ski 7 Islands: hotel transfer included, with your pickup time confirmed before the day.
• Private speedboat charters: pickup at around 08:00, confirmed before your trip.

Is Pickup Included from Kata and Karon?

Every day tour we sell includes a round-trip hotel transfer. On the Phi Phi tour, transfers are included from standard zones, while Kamala and some outer areas pay a surcharge or need a private car. Kata and Karon are not on that surcharge list at the time of writing, and the booking page always shows any transfer option that applies.

Kata Noi and the hotels on the hills above the beaches belong to the same area, but some hillside roads are steep and narrow. If your hotel is hard for a minibus to reach, the driver may ask to meet you at the main entrance or the nearest main road. Which Tours Are Easiest from Kata and Karon

Raya and Coral Island: the shortest morning

Because Chalong Pier is close, this is the easiest island day from Kata and Karon. You spend the morning on Coral Island, then continue to Racha Yai for snorkeling at Patok, Lah or Siam Bay (chosen on the day based on conditions), with a buffet lunch at a seaview restaurant and free time on the beach. The tour costs 2,400 THB per adult and 1,700 THB per child (4 to 11), with mask, snorkel, life jacket and a licensed English or Chinese speaking guide included. Phi Phi and Khai: the classic long day

The Phi Phi tour works fine from Kata and Karon despite the longer drive to the east coast. The route covers Khai Nai, Monkey Beach, lunch on Phi Phi Don, Viking Cave from the boat, Pileh Lagoon and the walk from Loh Sama Bay to Maya Bay. It costs 3,100 THB per adult and 2,200 THB per child (4 to 11), national park fee included, and takes about 10 hours.

James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay: calm water

Phang Nga Bay is sheltered by the mainland, so it runs in both seasons and is the steadiest boat day if anyone in your group worries about rough water. The tour costs 3,500 THB per adult and 2,200 THB per child (3 to 11) and includes a sea canoe at Hong Island (or Talu Island, depending on the tide) and lunch at Koh Panyee. Bring cash for the national park fee, paid on the day.

When the West Coast Is Rough

From roughly May to October, the southwest monsoon sends swell onto Kata and Karon beaches. Red flags go up and rip currents are common, so only swim between the flags where lifeguards are present. This does not mean every boat trip is off. Chalong Pier and the east coast piers face away from the swell, and Phang Nga Bay is sheltered, so trips there often run while the west coast beaches are closed to swimming. Kata or Karon: Does It Make a Difference?

For tours, very little. Drivers treat the two beaches as one area. Karon is slightly closer to Patong and Kata slightly closer to Chalong, so the order of pickups can shift a few minutes either way.

Practical Tips for the Morning

• Be in the lobby 10 minutes early. Drivers collect several hotels on one route and cannot wait long.
• Keep your phone on the evening before, when the exact pickup time is confirmed.
• Give the exact hotel name when you book, and at a large resort check which entrance the driver will use.
• Bring cash for drinks, optional activities and, on the James Bond Island trip, the park fee.
