Can You Visit Phi Phi Islands Without a Tour?

Yes, You Can Visit Phi Phi Independently

You do not need to join an organized tour to visit the Phi Phi Islands. It is entirely possible to take a public ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi Don, the main inhabited island, and explore on your own. However, whether this is the best option depends on what you want to see and how much time you have.

Option 1: Public Ferry to Phi Phi Don

How It Works

Public ferries depart from Rassada Pier in Phuket Town. Several companies operate this route daily. The journey takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours.

Ferry Schedule

Ferries typically depart Phuket at 8:30 AM, 11:00 AM, and 2:00 PM. Return ferries from Phi Phi Don usually depart at 9:00 AM, 12:30 PM, and 2:30 PM. Schedules change seasonally, so always confirm current times.

Ferry Prices

  • One-way ticket: 400 to 800 THB per person
  • Round-trip ticket: 700 to 1,400 THB per person
  • VIP seating: 100 to 200 THB extra

What You Can Do on Phi Phi Don

  • Explore Tonsai Village and its shops, restaurants, and bars
  • Hike to Phi Phi Viewpoint (about 30 minutes uphill, rewarded with panoramic views)
  • Swim at Long Beach, Loh Dalum Bay, or other beaches
  • Rent a kayak and paddle along the coast
  • Book a local longtail boat to visit nearby beaches

The Catch: Phi Phi Leh Is Tour-Only

Phi Phi Leh (where Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, and Viking Cave are located) is an uninhabited island within the national park. There is no pier and no ferry service. The only way to visit is by tour boat or private charter.

If your main goal is Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon, you need a tour. You can either:

  • Book a day tour from Phuket that includes Phi Phi Leh
  • Travel to Phi Phi Don independently, then book a local longtail boat to Phi Phi Leh (about 1,500 to 3,000 THB for a half-day private longtail)

For a solo traveler or couple wanting to see both islands in one day, a guided tour is actually cheaper than going independently.

When Independent Travel Makes Sense

  • Staying overnight on Phi Phi Don. Experience the island after day trippers leave.
  • Extended trip. Spending 2 or more nights on Phi Phi.
  • Budget travel. Skipping Phi Phi Leh and just enjoying Phi Phi Don's beaches.
  • Flexibility. Setting your own schedule.

When a Guided Tour Makes Sense

  • Day trip from Phuket. A speedboat tour covers more ground in less time.
  • First visit. A guided tour ensures you see all the highlights.
  • Convenience. Hotel pickup, lunch, equipment, and a guide are all included.
  • Better value. The all-inclusive price is often less than arranging everything independently.

Private Boat Option

A private speedboat charter gives you complete freedom. You choose which islands to visit, how long to stay, and when to head back. Ideal for groups of 4 or more.

If you have one day, book a guided speedboat tour. If you want a deeper experience, take the ferry and stay overnight. Browse our available tours to find the right option.
