White Water Rafting from Phuket: Phang Nga Rafting Guide

A Jungle Day Instead of a Beach Day

Phuket is known for islands and beaches, but some of the most fun days out happen inland. North of Phuket, across the bridges to the mainland, the province of Phang Nga has rainforest, rivers and limestone hills. That is where white water rafting trips from Phuket go. A typical day combines a river run with other jungle activities, so you get a full adventure without needing any experience.

This guide explains how our White Water Rafting, Flying Fox and Waterfall Adventure works: what happens at each stop, what is included, what the optional extras cost and who the trip suits.

Is There Rafting in Phuket Itself?

Not really. Phuket is an island without the kind of river you need for white water rafting. When you see "Phuket rafting" advertised, the rafting almost always takes place on the mainland in Phang Nga province, with hotel pickup and transfer from Phuket. That is how this trip works too.

The trade-off is road time. Depending on where you stay and on traffic, expect a drive of roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way. The upside is a completely different landscape from the beaches, and a day that does not depend on sea conditions.

The Day Step by Step

1. Hotel pickup

Pickup is between 07:30 and 08:00 from your hotel in Phuket. The exact time is confirmed the evening before. The full day takes about 8 hours.

2. Suwankuha Temple (Monkey Cave)

The first stop is Wat Suwankuha, a Buddhist temple built inside a limestone cave in Phang Nga. Inside is a large golden reclining Buddha, and the cave ceiling and rock formations make it one of the more unusual temples in southern Thailand. Monkeys live around the entrance, which is why it is often called the Monkey Cave. Keep food, sunglasses and small items in your bag, and do not feed the monkeys.

It is a temple, so dress respectfully: cover your shoulders and knees when you go inside.

3. Safety briefing and white water rafting, 5 km

At the rafting base you get a safety briefing and a short training session. Everyone gets a helmet and a life jacket. Then you ride 5 km of river rapids in an inflatable raft, with an experienced rafting guide steering from the back. You paddle when the guide calls it, hold on through the rapids and enjoy the calmer stretches in between. No experience is needed.

4. Flying fox

Next is the flying fox, a zipline across the jungle. You wear a full harness and a helmet, and the staff clip you in and out. It is short but a real highlight for many people.

5. Lunch and a jungle walk to the waterfall

Lunch is served at a local restaurant. After lunch you walk through the jungle to a natural waterfall, where you can cool off in the pool. Bring shoes or sandals that can get wet and still grip on rocks.

6. Back to Phuket

After the waterfall you are driven back to your hotel in Phuket.

Optional Extras: ATV and Elephant Trekking

If you want a longer and more active day, you can add extras when you book. Prices are per person:

  • ATV in the jungle, 30 minutes: 500 THB. A guided quad bike ride on jungle trails.
  • Elephant trekking, 30 minutes: 500 THB. A rainforest elephant trek.
  • ATV and elephant trekking combo: 900 THB for both.

The ATV is the more popular add-on with groups of friends. Elephant trekking is a personal choice: many travelers now prefer to see elephants at observation-only sanctuaries rather than ride them, and it is completely fine to skip it. The main rafting trip is the same either way.

Who Is Rafting For?

The trip is rated moderate. You need to be able to sit in a raft, hold on and paddle when asked, and walk a jungle trail to the waterfall. It suits:

  • Adventure seekers who have done the island tours and want something different.
  • Groups of friends, since sharing a raft is half the fun.
  • Families with older kids who are comfortable in water and happy to follow instructions.

It is not suitable for pregnant women or guests with back, neck or heart problems. If you are traveling with younger children, contact us before booking so we can check what makes sense for your family. For other ideas with kids, see our Phuket with kids guide.

Rafting in the Rainy Season

Rafting is one of the best things to do in Phuket's rainy season, which runs roughly from May to October. When the west coast sea is rough and some boat trips are cancelled, an inland river day is still very much on. Rain also feeds the river, and a river with more water generally has livelier rapids. In a long dry spell the rapids can be gentler.

Water level changes with the season and the recent rain, so the rafting guides decide on safety on the day. For more ideas when the weather turns, read our guide to Phuket tours in the rainy season.

What to Bring

  • Swimwear to wear under your clothes
  • Shorts and a light T-shirt that can get wet
  • A towel and a change of clothes for the drive home
  • Sandals with a strap or water shoes (flip-flops come off in the river)
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • A camera or phone in a waterproof pouch, or leave it in the vehicle during rafting
  • Something to cover shoulders and knees for the temple

Safety Tips

  • Listen to the briefing. The commands your guide uses on the river are explained there.
  • Keep your helmet and life jacket on for the whole river run, even on calm stretches.
  • If you fall in, float on your back with your feet pointing downstream and wait for the guide's instructions.
  • Tell the guide about any health issues before you get in the raft.
  • Check your travel insurance covers adventure activities. See our travel insurance guide.
