Why the East Coast?

Phuket's west coast faces the open Andaman Sea. It is where the famous beaches are, but it is also where the swell arrives, especially during the southwest monsoon from roughly May to October. The east coast faces Phang Nga Bay, which is sheltered by the mainland and dotted with small islands. The water there is usually much calmer, which matters a lot when you are driving a small craft for several hours.

Hotel pickup and briefing

Round-trip hotel transfer is included. You are picked up from your hotel in Phuket and driven to the jet ski base on the east coast. Before anyone starts an engine, you get a safety briefing and every rider gets a life jacket.

Riding in a guided group

A guide rides a separate jet ski at the front of the group and sets the pace. The group stays together, so you do not need to know the way or read the water yourself. This is the biggest difference from a beach rental: someone who knows the route, the tides and the local boat traffic is always with you.

The jet skis

The tour uses 1200 cc jet skis. Each jet ski carries 1 or 2 riders: one driver, plus an optional passenger sitting behind. The maximum load is 150 kg per jet ski, so two larger adults may need to take one jet ski each.

Who Can Drive?

These are the rules on this tour. They exist for safety and the guides enforce them on the day:

• Drivers must be at least 15 years old.
• Drivers must be sober. Riders who have been drinking alcohol are not allowed to drive.
• Some guests cannot drive: pregnant women, the elderly, disabled guests and guests with medical conditions are not allowed to drive.
• Maximum 150 kg per jet ski, driver and passenger combined.
• Bring your passport on the day.

Safety Tips for Your Day

• Stay behind the guide. Overtaking the guide or wandering off the route is how people end up in shallow water or near other boats.
• Keep a safe distance from the jet ski in front of you. Many jet skis have no real brakes. You slow down mostly by releasing the throttle, and that takes space.
• Start slowly. Use the first few minutes to get a feel for the controls and how the jet ski turns.
• Slow down near swimmers, sandbars and mangroves. The guide will signal where to reduce speed.
• Passengers hold on. Passengers should hold the driver or the grab handle and warn the driver if they want a slower pace.
• Tell the guide if you feel unwell, tired or uncomfortable. Swapping driver and passenger is easy at a stop.
