Do You Need a Passport for Island Tours in Phuket?

It is one of the most common questions the night before a boat trip: do I take my passport or leave it in the hotel safe? For most island day trips from Phuket, you can leave it behind. The islands you visit are in Thailand, you come back to Phuket the same day, and there is no immigration check on the way. There are exceptions, though, and one of them is on our own tour list.

This guide explains when you need your passport, when a copy is enough, and how to keep documents safe and dry on a boat.

The Quick Answer

• Most island day trips: no passport needed. Leave it in the hotel safe.
• Jet Ski 7 Islands tour: bring your passport. The tour asks every guest to bring it on the day.
• Everyday ID: carry a copy or a photo of your passport photo page and entry stamp.
• Overnight stays and onward travel: bring it. Hotels, domestic flights and money exchange need it.

Day Tours Where You Can Leave It at the Hotel

For the other day tours we sell, a passport is not on the list of things to bring:

• The Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai Island tour. Phi Phi belongs to Krabi province, but it is a domestic trip with no immigration check.
• The James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay tour, which crosses into Phang Nga province by boat.
• The Raya and Coral Island snorkeling tour from Chalong Pier.
• The white water rafting trip in Phang Nga.

What you do need on these trips is cash. National park fees, where they apply, are paid in Thai baht. On the James Bond Island tour the fee is not included and is paid on the day, while on the Phi Phi tour it is already included.

When You Do Need Your Passport

The Jet Ski 7 Islands tour

The Jet Ski 7 Islands tour asks you to bring your passport on the day. You drive your own 1200 cc jet ski with a guide on the water leading the group, drivers must be at least 15, and the limit is 150 kg per jet ski. Renting a motorbike or car

Rental shops ask for ID, and some ask to keep your passport as a deposit. Many travelers prefer to offer a cash deposit instead, because leaving your passport with a business puts you in a weak position if there is a dispute over damage.

Staying overnight on another island

If you take a ferry to Phi Phi Don or another island and stay the night, your hotel will ask for your passport at check-in, since hotels in Thailand register their foreign guests.

Domestic flights, money exchange and SIM cards

Foreign visitors need a passport to check in for domestic flights, to change cash at an exchange booth and to register a Thai SIM card.

Crossing a border by boat

Trips that leave Thailand, for example between Koh Lipe in the far south and Langkawi in Malaysia, are international crossings with immigration checks. You need your passport and the right entry permission. These are not day tours from Phuket, and we do not sell them.

Do You Have to Carry ID in Thailand?

Officially, foreign visitors should be able to show their passport if an official asks for it. In practice, many travelers keep the original in the hotel safe and carry a clear copy of the photo page and entry stamp, plus a photo on their phone. If you prefer to follow the rule strictly, carry the original in a zipped pocket or pouch on land days, and seal it in a waterproof bag on boat days.

How to Keep Documents Safe on a Boat

• Waterproof pouch: a phone pouch on a lanyard fits a passport, some cash and a card.
• Small dry bag: 5 to 10 liters is enough for a phone, wallet, documents and a spare shirt.
• Zip bags: two sealed plastic bags, one inside the other, are a cheap backup if you forget a dry bag.
• Keep your bag with you, not loose on a seat. Speedboats take spray, and bags get moved around at stops.
• Do not take documents snorkeling. Leave them sealed in your bag.

What to Carry Instead

• A photo of your passport photo page and entry stamp on your phone, plus a copy saved in email or cloud storage.
• A printed copy of the photo page.
• Your hotel's name and address, in Thai if possible, for drivers.
• Your booking confirmation and the phone number you were given for the day.

If You Lose Your Passport

Report it to the Tourist Police (dial 1155) and ask for a police report, then contact your embassy or consulate for a replacement or emergency travel document. Having a copy and your passport number saved makes this much faster.
