Do You Need a Passport for Island Tours?

The Quick Answer
For most island day tours departing from and returning to Phuket, you do not need to bring your passport. The islands you visit on standard tours (Phi Phi, James Bond Island, Similan Islands, Coral Island) are all within Thai territory. There is no immigration checkpoint.
When You Do NOT Need a Passport
You can leave your passport at your hotel safe for these tours:
- Phi Phi Islands day trips (returning to Phuket same day)
- James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay tours
- Similan Islands day trips
- Coral Island (Koh Hae) tours
- Private speedboat charters within Thai waters
- Koh Racha day trips
- Hong Islands day trips
- Sunset cruises around Phuket
When You SHOULD Bring a Passport
Ferry or Boat Transfers to Other Provinces
If you are taking a one-way boat or ferry from Phuket to another destination, some operators may ask for passport details at check-in:
- Ferry from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi Don (if staying overnight)
- Ferry from Phuket to Krabi
- Ferry from Phuket to Koh Lanta
- Ferry from Phuket to Koh Lipe (immigration checkpoint near the Malaysian border)
Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe is in Satun province near the Malaysian border. There may be immigration checkpoints. Bring your passport for any trip to Koh Lipe.
International Boat Crossings
If crossing to Malaysia (Langkawi) or Myanmar by boat, you absolutely need your passport with valid entry permissions.
Keeping Documents Safe on Boat Tours
If you do bring your passport, keep it dry and safe:
- Waterproof phone pouch: Many are large enough for a passport. Available for 100 to 200 THB at tourist shops.
- Dry bag: A small 5 to 10 liter dry bag is perfect for phone, wallet, and documents.
- Ziplock bags: A simple double-bagged ziplock works in a pinch.
- Leave it at the hotel. If you do not need it, your hotel room safe is the safest option.
What ID Should You Carry Instead?
It is wise to carry some form of identification, even on a day tour:
- A photo of your passport on your phone
- A printed photocopy of your passport's main page
- Your hotel's business card
