Phuket Airport to Your Island Tour: Timing and Transfers

Many visitors want to make the most of every day in Phuket, and it is tempting to book an island tour for the day you land or the day you fly home. In practice it rarely works. Phuket International Airport is in the far north of the island, while most hotels and tour piers are further south, and island tours start early in the morning. This guide explains the timing, how to get from the airport to your hotel and how to fit tours around your flights.

Can you go straight from the airport to an island tour?

Realistically, no. Our day tours start with a hotel pickup, usually between about 07:30 and 08:45 depending on the tour, and then drive to piers on Phuket's east and south coasts. To make that work on your arrival day, you would need to land in the very early hours, get through immigration and baggage claim, drive to your hotel and be ready in the lobby before pickup, all after a long flight.

Immigration queues can be long in the high season, and flights are sometimes delayed. If you miss the pickup, it counts as a no-show, which is not refundable. Even if everything goes to plan, you would spend a long day in the sun and on a speedboat with no sleep. Our advice is simple: book your first tour for the day after you arrive, or later.

How far the airport is from the main areas

These are typical drive times by car or taxi. Traffic, weather and the time of day can make them longer.

• Patong: usually around 45 minutes to an hour, sometimes more in heavy traffic.
• Kata and Karon: around 1 to 1.5 hours.
• Phuket Town and Rassada Pier: around 40 minutes to an hour.
• Chalong Pier and Rawai in the south: often an hour or more.
• Northern beaches such as Nai Yang and Mai Khao: close to the airport, often 10 to 20 minutes.

So if you stay in the north near the airport, your tour pickups will usually be earlier and the drive to the pier longer.

Getting from the airport to your hotel

• Taxis and airport transfer counters: you will find them in the arrivals hall. Agree the fare before you set off.
• Ride-hailing apps: Grab and Bolt both operate in Phuket. Check where the pickup point for app rides is at the terminal.
• Hotel transfer: many hotels can arrange a car for you. It costs more but is the least stressful option after a long flight.
• Public bus: buses run from the airport to Phuket Town and down the west coast beaches. They are the cheapest option but slower, with limited luggage space.

If your hotel is near the airport

The beaches around the airport, such as Mai Khao, Nai Yang and Nai Thon, are quiet and beautiful, but they are further from the tour piers. Hotel transfers are included on our day tours, but on some tours the transfer covers standard pickup zones only, and hotels in outer areas can carry a surcharge or need a private car. You will see this on the tour page and when you book. If you are not sure which area your hotel is in, contact us before you book.

How to plan tours around your flights

Arrival day: keep it free

Check in, have a swim, find a good dinner and get an early night. If you land in the morning, most hotels will hold your bags until your room is ready. A walk around Phuket Old Town or a sunset at the beach is plenty for day one.

From day 2: the island days

• Put the most weather-dependent trip first. The Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai Island tour has the most open crossing of our tours, so booking it early in your stay leaves time to move it if the sea is rough.
• Use the sheltered trip as your backup. The James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay tour runs in calm water all year and fits any day of the week.
• Choose an easier day if you are still tired. The Raya and Coral Island tour has short boat rides and finishes at around 16:00.
• Leave a rest day between long tours where you can.

Departure day: no tours

Do not book an island tour on the day you fly home. The Phi Phi tour gets back at around 17:30 and the James Bond Island tour at around 17:00, and the sea, the tide or traffic can make it later. Add the drive to the airport and check-in time, and even an evening flight becomes a gamble. Plan a relaxed last morning instead.

Booking before you land

You can book online at our tours page before you travel. Most tours have free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, and some have their own terms shown on the tour page, so check them and our terms when you book. Luggage and passports

Do not bring suitcases on an island tour. Speedboats have very little space, and your bags are safer at your hotel. Do take a small dry bag with your phone, some cash and sunscreen. For the Jet Ski 7 Islands tour you need your passport on the day, so keep it with you in a waterproof pouch.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do an island tour on the day I arrive in Phuket?

It is rarely realistic. Tours start with early morning hotel pickups, and a late flight or long immigration queue can mean missing a tour you have paid for. Book from the next day.

Can I do a tour on the day I fly home?

We do not recommend it. Full day tours return in the late afternoon, and delays at sea or on the roads are common.
