How to Get from Phuket Airport to Your Island Tour
Can You Go Straight from the Airport to an Island Tour?
Technically yes, but we generally recommend against it. Here is why, and how to make it work if you must.
The Timing Challenge
Most full-day island tours depart between 7:00 and 8:00 AM. Hotel pickup starts at 5:30 to 7:00 AM depending on your location. If your flight arrives in the early morning, you would need to clear immigration, collect luggage, and travel to either your hotel or the pier, all before the tour departure.
Phuket International Airport (HKT) is located in the far north of the island, about 35 to 45 kilometers from the main departure piers. Travel time to the piers is 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on traffic.
Realistic Scenarios

Better Approach: Book Your Tour for Day 2
The most practical plan:
- Arrive in Phuket
- Transfer to your hotel, rest, and settle in
- Enjoy the rest of your arrival day exploring nearby attractions
- Start your island tour fresh the next morning with hotel pickup
This gives you time to recover from travel, avoid rushing, and start your tour day rested and relaxed.
If You Must Do Same-Day
If your schedule is very tight and you need to do a tour on your arrival day:
Option 1: Afternoon/Half-Day Tour
Some tours operate in the afternoon:
- Coral Island half-day tours (departing around 12:00 to 1:00 PM)
- Sunset cruises (departing around 4:00 to 5:00 PM)
- Some Phang Nga Bay afternoon tours
Option 2: Private Speedboat
A private speedboat charter can depart at any time you choose. If your flight lands at 10:00 AM, you could realistically be on a private boat by noon or 1:00 PM.
Airport to Pier Transport
If going directly from the airport to a pier:
- To Rassada Pier: 45 to 60 minutes. Taxi: 700 to 1,000 THB.
- To Chalong Pier: 50 to 70 minutes. Taxi: 800 to 1,100 THB.
- To Royal Phuket Marina: 30 to 40 minutes. Taxi: 600 to 800 THB.
Transport Options
- Metered taxi: Available outside arrivals. Insist on the meter or negotiate before getting in.
- Ride-hailing apps: Grab and Bolt operate in Phuket. Often cheaper than taxis.
- Pre-booked transfer: Arrange through your tour operator or hotel. Most reliable option.
- Airport minibus: Shared minibuses run to various destinations. Cheapest option but slowest (multiple stops).
Luggage Considerations
If going straight to a tour, you need somewhere to store your luggage. Options:
- Tour operator's vehicle: Most minivans have storage space. Ask your operator in advance.
- Pier luggage storage: Rassada Pier has basic storage facilities.
- Hotel early check-in: Some hotels allow early bag drop even if your room is not ready.
