Phuket Itinerary for 3 to 5 Days: Island Tours, Old Town and Beaches

Five days is the sweet spot for Phuket: enough for the two big island tours, Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay, plus Phuket Old Town, beach time and a free day, with a rest day between the boat trips. With three days you can still see the highlights: the Phi Phi tour, a beach and Old Town day, and Phang Nga Bay or a lighter last day. This guide gives the full 5 day plan first, then shows how to shorten it to three or four days.

How Much Fits into 3, 4 or 5 Days

All our shared day tours include return hotel transfers in Phuket and can be booked online until 12 hours before departure. The exact pickup time is confirmed the evening before.

Day 1: Arrival and Your First Beach

• Morning or afternoon: arrive and settle into your hotel. If you land early, head straight to the beach nearest your hotel.
• Late afternoon: walk the beach, swim and get your bearings.
• Evening: a casual dinner at a local restaurant. In Patong, stroll the beachfront promenade; in Kata or Karon, enjoy a quieter seaside dinner.

Use this first day to adjust to the heat and the time zone, and keep it relaxed: tomorrow starts early.

Day 2: Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay

The signature Phuket day trip: our Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai Island speedboat tour, about 10 hours from a pier on Phuket's east coast. A typical day:

• Early morning: hotel pickup and a light breakfast at the pier.
• Around 10:00 AM: first swim at Khai Nai Island.
• Late morning: Monkey Beach.
• Midday: halal buffet lunch on Phi Phi Don.
• Afternoon: Viking Cave, a swim in Pileh Lagoon, snorkeling and a turn on a stand-up paddle board.
• Late afternoon: Loh Sama Bay and the walk in to Maya Bay.
• Around 5:30 PM: back at the pier, then the transfer to your hotel.

The order of stops can change with the weather and sea conditions. The national park fee, breakfast, lunch, fruit and soft drinks, snorkel gear, life jacket and paddle board are included. In the evening, have a relaxed dinner and an early night: you will be pleasantly tired. Day 3: Phuket Old Town, Beach and Sunset

Morning

Sleep in after the long boat day, or spend 8:00 to 11:00 AM on one of Phuket's best beaches (see our beach guide). Swim, sunbathe or try stand-up paddleboarding if your beach has it.

Lunch and early afternoon in Old Town

• Around 11:30 AM: head to Phuket Old Town. A Grab taxi costs about 200 to 500 THB from most beach areas.
• Lunch: Lock Tien food court or a restaurant on Dibuk Road. Try the Hokkien noodles and oh tao.
• 1:00 to 3:00 PM: walk Thalang Road's Sino-Portuguese shophouses, Soi Romanee and the street art on Phang Nga Road, and visit the Thai Hua Museum. Cool off afterwards with a Thai iced coffee at a local cafe.

Late afternoon

Choose your pace: a spa (Thai massage from about 300 THB per hour), a cooking class (about 1,500 to 3,000 THB), or a different beach from the one near your hotel.

Evening

Watch the sunset from Promthep Cape or a viewpoint restaurant from around 5:30 PM, then have dinner at the Rawai seafood market or in Phuket Town. On a Sunday, rearrange the day so you are in Old Town for the Walking Street Market, which runs from 4:00 to 9:00 PM.

Day 4: Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island

Our James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay speedboat tour (about 9 hours) is a completely different day from Phi Phi: a calm, sheltered bay, dramatic limestone karsts, a sea canoe ride and a floating village.

• Morning: hotel pickup, the cliffs of Panak Island, then a sea canoe ride into the lagoon at Hong Island (or Talu Island, depending on the tide), paddled by a local guide.
• Midday: Thai buffet lunch (halal) at Koh Panyee floating village, then James Bond Island (Ko Tapu, Khao Ping Kan).
• Afternoon: a stop at Naka Island.
• Around 5:00 PM: back at the pier, then the transfer to your hotel.

The national park fee is not included on this tour; it is paid on the day. This Hong Island is in Phang Nga Bay, not the Hong Islands off Krabi. Spend the evening as you like: it is your last chance for shopping or nightlife if you are on the 4 day version. More in our James Bond Island guide.

Day 5: A Free Day, Your Choice

Option A: A third island day

Our Raya and Coral Island snorkeling tour is the gentlest third trip: beach time on Coral Island (Koh Hey), then snorkeling at Racha (Raya) Island and a seaview buffet lunch. It leaves from Chalong Pier and is back around 4:00 PM. Racha Yai is about 30 minutes from Phuket by speedboat and has clear water and a white sand beach. For something faster, the Jet Ski 7 Islands tour visits mangroves and islands off the east coast, priced per jet ski for one or two riders.

Snorkelers visiting in the open season, roughly November to May, can add a Similan Islands day trip, which offers the best snorkeling near Phuket. We do not sell it: it is run by other operators, mostly from Khao Lak piers, with a very early start (around 5:30 AM pickup from Phuket) and a long day. Option B: Beaches and a drive around the island

Visit a beach you have not seen yet, or rent a car or motorbike and explore: the Big Buddha viewpoint (free entry; dress modestly with knees and shoulders covered), Kamala, Nai Harn, or Bangla Road in Patong if you have not seen it. Our transport guide covers the options.

Option C: An activity day

Our white water rafting, flying fox and waterfall tour is a full jungle day inland in Phang Nga. Other providers run a discover scuba dive, zip-lining, Muay Thai classes and ethical elephant sanctuary visits.

Your last evening

The 3 Day Version

Three days in Phuket is enough to see the island's highlights without feeling rushed, as long as you arrive the evening before Day 1 and book the first tour in advance.

Day 1: Phi Phi Islands

Start with the Phi Phi tour as in Day 2 above. Doing the longest sea trip first leaves Day 3 free as a backup if the sea is too rough. Have an early night.

Day 2: Beach morning and Phuket Old Town

Follow Day 3 above: a beach from about 8:00 to 11:00 AM, lunch and a walk in Old Town, then sunset at Promthep Cape and dinner. On a Sunday, plan the afternoon around the Walking Street Market.

Day 3: Phang Nga Bay or a lighter day

Phang Nga Bay (Day 4 above) is the best second tour if you want variety: it looks and feels nothing like Phi Phi. For a gentler last day, the Raya and Coral Island tour is back around 4:00 PM. Half-day Coral Island trips with a short boat ride are also sold by other operators; ours combines Coral Island with Racha in a full day. Or skip the boat: a morning cooking class, the Big Buddha in the afternoon, then sunset at Promthep Cape and dinner at a Rawai beachfront restaurant. Adjust the Plan to Your Travel Style

• Families with young children: consider replacing Phi Phi with the Raya and Coral Island tour. The shorter boat ride and calmer water suit small kids better. See Phuket island tours with kids.
• Snorkelers: in the November to May season, a Similan trip with a Khao Lak operator offers much better underwater experiences than Phang Nga Bay. Our snorkeling spots guide compares the options.
• Food lovers: stretch the Old Town day with a guided food tour (about 1,500 to 2,500 THB), which takes you to local spots you would never find on your own.

Where to Stay for 3 to 5 Days

On a short trip, location matters more than usual. Kata or Karon is the best all-round base: a central location, a good beach, a reasonable distance to the tour piers and restaurants for every budget. Patong is best if nightlife and shopping are your priorities, with the most walkable evening entertainment. Kamala and Surin Beach are quieter and more upscale, but further from the main departure points, and the Phi Phi tour adds a transfer surcharge for Kamala and outer areas. On the 3 day version you still pay for the same two tours if you do both, while rooms, food and extras shrink with the number of days. Tour prices are set per date, so check the tour pages for yours, and remember the Phang Nga Bay national park fee is paid on the day. If the Weather Turns

If rain disrupts a day, move the beach and outdoor plans to a later day and use the wet one for a cooking class, a spa, Central Festival mall or Phuket Old Town, where much of the day is under cover. Rain in Thailand usually comes in short afternoon bursts, so mornings are often clear even in the rainy season. If we cancel a tour for unsafe weather, you choose a full refund or a new date, which is another reason to schedule Phi Phi early and keep a flexible day.
