Phuket in October: Weather and Which Tours Run

October sits on the border between Phuket's two seasons. The southwest monsoon is still in charge for most of the month, so rain and rough seas on the west coast are part of the picture, but the calmer, drier months of the high season are close. For flexible travelers it can be a good time to visit: fewer crowds, green hills and most tours still running. The key is choosing the right trips and leaving room for the weather.

What the Weather Is Like in October

October is usually one of the wetter months of the year in Phuket. That does not mean it rains all day. A typical pattern is a mix of sunny spells and heavy showers or storms, often in the afternoon or overnight, with some fully rainy days and some clear ones. It stays warm, and the sea is warm too.

The bigger factor for tours is the sea. While the southwest monsoon lasts, wind and swell come from the open Andaman Sea onto Phuket's west coast. West coast beaches such as Patong, Kata and Karon can have strong waves and dangerous rip currents, so only swim where there are lifeguards, between the flags, and never when red flags are up. The east coast and Phang Nga Bay, sheltered by the mainland, are usually much calmer.

Which Tours Run in October

James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay

This is the safest bet for October. Phang Nga Bay is enclosed by the mainland and dozens of islands, so the water inside usually stays calm even when the west coast is rough. Heavy showers can still pass through, and a stormy day can cancel a trip, but the bay runs on far more days than open-sea routes. The karst scenery also looks dramatic under clouds, and the rainforest on the islands is at its greenest.

Jet Ski 7 Islands

The jet ski tour also runs on Phuket's sheltered east coast, around the Naka Islands and into the mangroves. Heavy rain and wind can still stop it on some days, but it is one of the better sea activities for the shoulder season. The jet ski tour costs 7,500 THB per jet ski for 1 or 2 riders.

White water rafting

Rain is part of the fun on a river. The rafting trip in the Phang Nga jungle runs in both seasons, and the water level on the river changes with the rain. The guide decides on safety on the day. It is the natural plan B when the sea forecast looks poor. The white water rafting, flying fox and waterfall tour costs 2,500 THB per adult and 2,200 THB per child.

Raya and Coral Island

Coral Island is close to Phuket and partly sheltered, and Racha lies in open water further south. Trips run on many October days, especially in the morning, and the guide chooses the calmest snorkeling bay. Some days the crossing is rough and trips are cancelled for safety, and the water can be less clear than in the dry season. The Raya and Coral Island tour costs 2,400 THB per adult and 1,700 THB per child.

Phi Phi, Maya Bay and Khai Island

Phi Phi tours run on many days in October, but the crossing is the longest and most exposed of our trips, so it is the most likely to be bumpy or cancelled. If you are set on Phi Phi, book it early in your stay so you have spare days to move it. Maya Bay has closed for about two months in most recent low seasons, around August and September, and it can close at short notice for weather or conservation. The Similan Islands

The Similan national park usually reopens around 15 October after its monsoon closure. The exact date is set each year by the national park authority. Early in the season the sea can still be lively, and the crossing is long and on open water. Advantages of Visiting in October

• Fewer people: popular stops such as James Bond Island and Coral Island are quieter than in the December to March peak.
• Green scenery: the hills and karst islands are at their most lush after months of rain.
• Easier booking: you can usually book tours a day or two ahead.

The Vegetarian Festival

Phuket's Vegetarian Festival is held in the ninth lunar month, which often falls in late September or October. It brings processions, firecrackers and vegetarian food stalls, especially around Phuket Town. The dates change every year, so check them for your trip if you want to see it or avoid the busy streets.

How to Plan an October Week

• Book the most weather dependent trip first. If Phi Phi or Raya matters most, schedule it early so a cancelled day can move.
• Keep buffer days. Do not fill every day with boat trips. Leave at least one free day between them.
• Favor mornings. Seas are often calmer and storms more common in the afternoon.
• Have a plan B. Rafting, Phuket Old Town, cooking classes and spas all work on rainy days.

4. Day 4: James Bond Island and Phang Nga Bay, or the jet ski tour.
5. Day 5: white water rafting, or Phi Phi if the sea has settled.

What to Pack for October

• A light rain jacket or poncho rather than an umbrella.
• A dry bag or waterproof phone pouch for boat days.
• Quick-dry clothes and sandals with grip for wet piers and landings.
• Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat. The sun is strong between showers.
• Insect repellent for evenings.
